During the transport parallel session of the 5th AU STC on Transport and Energy, experts highlighted Africa’s push toward safer and more sustainable mobility under the Single African Air Transport Market (#SAATM), a flagship project of Agenda 2063. Progress includes stronger aviation safety oversight through reinforced regional bodies, advancing the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) compliance and regulatory harmonization. Road safety is gaining traction with the African Road Safety Observatory, expanding data systems, capacity building, and a plan to halve fatalities by 2030. A continental electric mobility framework is also driving EV adoption, standards alignment, and value addition. Experts emphasize the need for increased financing, better data coordination, and alignment of national strategies to achieve integrated, resilient transport systems.
