A happy ending for the Brontës: Our memorial to literary sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë has been amended to add the diaereses (the two dots over the ‘e’ that indicate the word has two syllables) which had been missing from their names.

The diaereses weren’t included when the memorial was installed in Poets’ Corner 85 years ago. Sharon Wright, Editor of the Brontë Society Gazette, noticed the omission when she visited the Abbey earlier this year and wrote to the Dean of Westminster to ask if they could be added.

The work was completed this week by Abbey stonemason Mark Croll and conservator Lucy Ackland.

It remains a mystery why the diaereses were missing from the memorial, but they have a fascinating role in the history of the famous Brontë name, which evolved from their father Patrick’s Irish surname of Prunty or Brunty.
