It is interesting to see India taking steps to establish clear guardrails on AI models and platforms. MEITY's requirement to seek an approval to operate (ATO) is consistent with what we see emerging in other geographies. ATO for AI is likely to show up more and more.

Theres much noise and confusion being created , many by people who shd know better 🤷🏻‍♂️ . I repeat myself here for their benefit

➡️There are legal consequences under existing laws (both criminal n tech laws) for platforms that enable or directly output unlawful content.

➡️Unlawful content specified under Rule 3(1)(b) of IT rules

➡️All Platforms do not hv safe harbour or free pass vis a vis unlawful content. - This is the law as it exists

➡️Advisory was simply that - advise to those deploying lab level /undertested AI platforms onto public Internet and that cause harm or enable unlawful content - to be aware that, platforms hv clear existing obligations under IT and criminal law. So best way to protect urself is to use labelling and explicit consent and if ur a major platform take permission from govt before u deploy error prone platforms.

➡️Public Internet shd not be conflated with a Sandbox insofar as unlawful content is concerned. Indian Internet is governed by laws to keep it Safe & Trusted

➡️India believes in AI and is all in not just for Talent but also as part of expanding our Digital & innovatn ecosystem. Indias ambitions in AI and ensuring Internet users get a safe&trusted internet are not binaries
