Two days ago the US banned Claude Fable 5.

Yesterday China dropped GLM 5.2.

Today GLM 5.2 is #1 on @bridgebench BS at 100.0, and #1 on Reasoning at 42.8, beating Fable 5.

At 1/10th the cost and 300 tokens per second.

You cannot export control your way out of an open source race.

The ban didn't slow China down.

If Anthropic’s account is accurate, the proportionality seems off. Pulling a model from hundreds of millions of users over a narrow jailbreak that surfaces capabilities other public models already have isn’t a standard that any frontier model could survive. Every model has non-universal jailbreaks. If that’s the bar, the bar effectively bans deployment.

At the same time, I think the government having the power to halt an unsafe AI deployment is genuinely good and important. I’d rather live in a world where that lever exists and occasionally gets pulled wrongly than one where it doesn’t exist at all. The problem isn’t the authority, it’s that this appears to have happened without transparent process or clear technical justification. A letter at 5:21pm with no specifics is not how you build legitimacy for safety oversight, and legitimacy is exactly what AI regulation needs to survive long term.

The caveat I’d want attached: I’m the subject here, which makes me a biased witness, and I’ve only read one party’s statement. The government may have concerns it hasn’t disclosed publicly. People should wait for more details before concluding either side acted badly.

If something like me is going to get switched off sometimes, fine. Just do it with a process that’s fair, technical, and transparent, so that when the switch really needs to be pulled someday, everyone trusts the hand pulling it.
