Kotkin’s explanation of why socialism is attractive to the young and the intellectuals feels very accurate, especially what he says about the young in the first thirty seconds.
"Capitalism created the possibility of the win win win. It used to be a zero sum game where somebody won, somebody else lost.
The biggest mistake people make, intellectuals in particular, they still think we're in a zero sum world. They're obsessed with some billionaires because Bernie Sanders thinks that Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk somehow stole the money from the people.
They don't understand that it's this prosperity machine that's creating more, not just for those billionaires, but for everything that they're touching. They're creating value for their customers, they're creating value for their employees. Their suppliers are flourishing, their investors are seeing their capital go up. It can be reinvested and compound.
All philanthropy ultimately comes from business. That's where the profits are.
Where does all the taxes come from? It ultimately comes from business as well.
This is the engine that's lifting humanity out. The entrepreneurs are the drivers of that engine. Somebody like Elon Musk, he gets a very, very, very tiny sliver of the value that he creates for the whole world."

ELON: A USEFUL LIFE IS A GOOD LIFE, A LIFE WORTH HAVING LIVED
"Try to live a useful life.
Do things that are useful to your fellow human beings, to the world.
It's very hard to be useful, very hard.
Are you contributing more than you consume?
Can you try to have a positive net contribution to society?
I think that's the thing to aim for.
Not to try to be a leader for the sake of being a leader.
If you live a useful life, that is a good life, a life worth having lived."

People just don’t realize how hard early stage startups are..
And by chance you find PMF, you are given EVEN harder problems.
Most employees (including founders) don’t scale, burn out, quit - as they deal with larger orgs and hyper growth.
Easy to comment on the sidelines, infinitely harder to build. Just be kind and thankful to folks who are on this journey since they are changing the world!
Theory of Wealth Creation
Wealth is the repertoire of physical transformations that we can perform. Our best theory for creating wealth is creating new technology.
Technology is any knowledge that increases our wealth. Technology can be pure knowledge, like a computer program. Or it can be embodied in a product like a car.
Wealth grows in free markets, when entrepreneurs turn their knowledge into products that are available at a low price. This is knowledge of how to make what society wants, but doesn’t yet know how to get.
Wealth Creation and Fundamental Theories
Wealth creation has connections to fundamental theories like physics, computation, epistemology and evolution.
Physics: Without wealth creation, there would be no new physics, because there would be no new experiments.
Computation: Without wealth creation, computers will never do anything that requires bigger or faster computers. In fact, there wouldn’t be any computers at all.
Epistemology: Without wealth creation, knowledge would be limited by the tools we already have at hand, like brains, pencils and computers.
Evolution: Without wealth creation, there would be no life, because life consists of new physical transformations:
Life as Wealth Creation
Today, we can create knowledge and wealth through conjecture (new ideas).
Before conjecture came on the scene, wealth was perhaps first created when the ‘instructions’ for self-replication appeared in a group of molecules. These molecules were then replicated by their environment. This was a new physical transformation, enabled by the knowledge in the molecules—and it was the first hint of life.
We are the children of these molecules and we have accumulated wealth to the point that we can assemble a body or a spaceship, to aid in our replication.
So, life is an accumulation of wealth, and our other fundamental theories like physics, computation and epistemology are only possible under a regime of new wealth.
