a blessing for the life you didn't choose
Blessed are you when the shock subsides,
when vaguely, you see a line appear that divides before and after.
You didn’t draw it, and can barely even make it out.
But as surely as minutes add up to hours and days,
here you are,
forced into a story you never would have written.
Blessed are you in the tender place of wonder and dread,
Wondering how to be whole when dreams have disappeared and part of you with them,
where mastery, control, determination, bootstrapping, and grit,
are consigned to the realm of before (where most of the world lives),
in the fever dream that promises infinite choices, unlimited progress, best life now.
Blessed are we in the after, loudly shouting: is there anybody here?
We hear the echo, the shuffle of feet, the murmur of others
asking the same question, together in the knowledge
that we are far beyond what we know.
Show us a glimmer of possibility in this new constraint,
that small truths will be given back to us.
We are held.
We are safe.
We are loved.
We are loved.
We are loved.
And best of all: We are not alone.

Being a writer means constantly checking myself and deleting out the habitual placement of the word “real” in front of “writer.” Impostor syndrome tells lies.
For your YA shelf: @cmcognevich's guide for managing stress, written specifically with young adults in mind as they navigate adolescence while also being bombarded with more difficult news than ever.

I spent eleven years as an educator making peace every day with dying for my students if necessary. Knowing this is the American reality. It should not be. Full stop.
26 years ago, a gunman entered
Dunblane Primary School in Scotland,
killing 16 kids and a teacher. The UK
govt responded by enacting tight gun
control legislation. In the 9400+ days
since, there have been a total of O
school shootings in the UK. #Uvalde
I cannot overemphasize how much it means to the little book loving child inside of me that I was accepted to the VCFA Writing for Children and Young Adult Oxford/Bath Spa residency this summer. I'm going to the UK. To dream. To write. To love. Unreal. I'm so grateful.
no one told me that half of adulthood is wondering if people are mad at you because they didn’t answer your email and the other half is not answering emails because you’re tired

Children love books about boarding schools because they love the idea of living with their friends in a single building where magical things happen. A school is just a plot device to create what many humans (young and old) crave: a walkable, close-knit community.
there’s magic in loving someone with all their flaws. their crooked, their crinkled, their scabbed knees and the knots in their hair. never turn them into statues of gold. the more you worship someone the less human they become, and the more catastrophically their statue shatters
in another universe, there is a warm light that flickers across your vision when someone is thinking good thoughts about you. even after you’re gone, wherever you go— if someone thinks of you with warmth you will see the light and know that you’re still living on inside someone.
there is a nymph who lives by the sea. every morning she walks down the beach, collecting shells as the sun glides out of the water. and every evening as it melts back into the blue, she listens to the voices trapped inside the hollow ocean bones, searching for the one she lost.
people say “you should be grateful for capitalism” but I want to live in a world where work doesn’t consume us, where competitive schooling doesn’t take all the joy out of learning, where people have leisure to read and create and enjoy life.
