#OceanLiteracy is key to marine conservation and community engagement especially in coastal nations like Australia.
Researchers at @CMS_UTas and @IMASUTAS outline a roadmap to strengthen ocean literacy for a more sustainable future.

Citizen scientists are making a major contribution to understanding how marine species are responding to climate change, including which Australian species are moving south.
New research led by @IMASUTAS used observations of 200 marine species recorded over 10 years in the citizen scientist databases @RedmapMarine, @inaturalist, @ReefLifeSurvey to identify detections of species outside of their usual range.
The analysis detected 73 species (39%) out-of-range. Range extensions were concentrated in the southwest (Western Australia) and southeast (New South Wales and Tasmania), which are influenced by warm boundary currents and considered ocean warming hotspots.
91% of the range extensions identified were not previously described, showing the value that opportunistically collected citizen science data can make to understanding climate impacts on marine life.

Happy to share my first #PhD paper is now published! We identified 82 shallow reef species around Australia facing extinction risk with decadal declines (>30%) that would qualify them in a threatened category based on the @IUCNRedList criteria🌿🦞🐟 https://t.co/dp9ACfAZUT

As we start the year facing floods, extreme heat, and fires across the country, it’s also time to consider extreme events unfolding in a less visible but equally critical environment—underwater.
Right now, a marine heatwave is underway off Western Australia. We know it’s happening, but we don’t yet know how severe it is or how much impact it is having on marine life. That’s why ongoing monitoring is crucial.
Keeping a close watch on our ocean’s health is key to protecting the marine life and industries that rely on it.
We strongly encourage any Great Southern Reef fishers, boaters, divers or beachcombers to keep an eye out and Spot, Log and Map any out-of-range or uncommon species sightings to @RedmapMarine via the website.

Shows why Australia needs to be assertive on its role in governing the biosphere - both in its contribution to the state of the biosphere and its contribution to global regulation. It is not either or. Our future depends on it. #auspol
