“What if I told you there’s a man-made policy that’s caused pandemic and Katrina-sized learning loss?” New from me today @freep 👇

In general, Detroit students miss more school on warmer days in the spring and colder days in the winter—with the impact largest for students who miss school the most. https://t.co/cio3cNrhGc…
Building repairs and upgrades for adequate heating and AC are essential!
Intetesting...definitely curious how these researchers will "help district leaders analyze student performance data throughout the school year," and how this differs from data-driven instruction strategies that have shown no impact on student outcomes. https://t.co/m4y54VvtRh
Or let's just take that time and actually let teachers grade and give students feedback, you know, the data collection and analysis that teachers are doing every day.
Teachers should spend less time analyzing data and more time collaborating and learning to improve instruction: "having teachers themselves examine test-score data has yet to be proven productive, even after many trials of such programs."

It’s quite concerning that @BostonSchools says no more masks for @tbaupdates , you’ve had your share. Students come through our doors every day in need of a mask. We have to do better!
This #HispanicHeritageMonth , we celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Teach Plus teacher leaders―as well as the contributions of those who helped foster the success of today’s Hispanic and Latinx educators and students.

As someone who pre-pandemic did the work of making sure every student on my caseload (100 students--small) had a summer plan--- this work NEEDS to start in Jan/Feb in order to be successful and it takes a TON of time. May is just too late.
On this #MothersDay2021, remember that the US:
—Doesn’t have guaranteed paid maternity leave
—Doesn’t guarantee paid sick days for workers (unlike nearly 200 other countries)
—Doesn't have a subsidized, widely accessible system of childcare https://t.co/kdgEcsqfum
Many students who chose to come back are choosing to go remote again. Hybrid teaching and learning have stripped joy from education for many teachers and students. How can we safely bring the joy back into schools?

Keeping the focus on race means pushing educators to reflect, take constructive feedback, and commit to evolving their practice. Join my @TeachPlus fellows in our anti-racist workshop tomorrow 3/25 (5:00pm): https://t.co/IAG9s4wyzd @tk_nagayoshi, @iTeachOwls, @IAMtashajones
The research is in: Second grade social studies students from low-income communities in 24 project-based learning classrooms gained the equivalent of 5-6 months more learning than peers in non-PBL classrooms. #LearningWeNeed@UMichEducation
Not every school is funded equally and COVID has shone a bright light on those inequities. We have to deal with the fact that a lot of schools already had poor infrastructure and ventilation far before COVID and need to be brought up to speed. https://t.co/a54Eh55Ody
In MA we're "lucky," we have a paid family leave law, but municipalities are exempt, and none in MA voted to opt in. That's why municipal workers, like Boston public school teachers, don't get paid parental leave, instead we save up sick days. @CharlieBakerMA, let's change that.
America's childcare crisis: how it unfairly puts the burden on women, how the U.S. stacks up against other countries, and the one time in history the government subsidized day care.
We have an opportunity to reshape education; to rethink the systems and structures put in place to engage, evaluate, track, and teach our kids; to redefine what our students need to be learning (#BHM365) and what learning looks like (#SEL#PBL). If not now, when?
"Wholly meeting student needs means we need to ensure our educators are whole first. We need to create spaces in which adults themselves, to use the language of the ASCD whole child framework, are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged."
