[A Saturday🪡]
Dear Oregonians,
Our narrative about education is tired, and our outlook is mainly false. Our children are not doing OK; the answer is not more money.
"Lazy parent problem"?
I know a guy working 3 jobs, wife works 2. His well-behaved always at school by 7:45, clean, fed, rested, w/ bagged lunch. Kid's always 'Yes sir. No sir'.
So, he's lazy if he doesn't teach them to read?
Nothing boils my blood > "lazy parents" label
Neighbors complain about homeless vehicles lining Southeast Clinton Street near 136th Avenue, and now they are worried about their kids who walk past the vehicles on their way to a bus stop.

Many of us don’t need to be persuaded that Oregon schools aren’t consistently educating our children to their highest potential — we just need permission to say the quiet part out loud.
For the first time in more than a century, salmon are swimming freely along the Klamath River and its tributaries — a major watershed near the California-Oregon border — just days after the largest dam removal project in U.S. history was completed.

Worth pointing out that every one of the nominated orgs/coalitions for the @PIEnetwork Game Changer of the Year are women. This is really awesome to see.
(And I didn’t even mention that THREE of these nominees are being celebrated for reforming their state funding formulas!)
It’s humbling to hear these stories. These women are changing the way that children are educated across the country.
We can do this work in Oregon. Let’s go!
"When most kids in a class are non-readers, does daily Silent Reading time still make sense... for the kids?"
If you get 20 different answers to this, in a school bldg, there needs to be honest, well-facilitated, PD.
Alignment matters
My child’s dysgraphia diagnosis disappeared upon transferring to a school w/weekly spelling instruction. She’d proudly come home from school showing off her “4.0” on the weekly spelling test.
How many children are diagnosed w/learning disabilities because they’re never taught?

The system, which was fully designed to purposely exclude, historically marginalized populations, is unequivocally broken.

Equity and justice have become transactional checkboxes (or it's always been that way for the #edublob).
We'd all benefit from grappling with Andy's push here to unpack whether making a "statement" about a social issue is an organization's appropriate role.
Today @eduwonk. Why @bellwetherorg doesn't do statements and why others are going that way, too. Plus canceling Denver reforms, Pondiscio on canceling, 50Can survey, is "woke" over? And fish! More >

Professional development and coaching for teachers--that's just one key strategy behind the academic success of Texas' high-poverty charter and traditional public schools--and a policy priority for FCCS.
