In her book, The Right Call, Sally Jenkins shares how Coach Tony Dungy learned this lesson as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1999 with a team that won the division.

One day, John Lynch said to him, "Coach, are we doing anything that you like? Are we any good at all?"

"Sure," Dungy replied.

"Well, we wouldn't know it," Lynch said.

Dungy was surprised.

“I’m pleased, I’m fired up, they’re playing great,” Dungy remembers, “but they don’t know it because I haven’t told them.”

A little positive reinforcement goes a long way, especially with people who are hard on themselves.

It’s ok to just get through the day. We don’t always have to be pushing, striving, etc. We are all just doing life together. So give people space to work through trying times. One month, one day, one task at a time.

@Baghurst Skills that are not specific to soccer.
Grades, work ethic, attitude, social interaction with coaches and teammates. Don’t focus on a specific technique because each coach wants things done a certain way or with a certain technique. Make yourself marketable to ALL programs.

@Baghurst IF they HAD TO choose, I would encourage a discussion with them and probably the parents just to talk through the decision. I wouldn’t encourage them to quit the sport I coach but I wouldn’t discourage it either if it’s what is best for the athlete.

@Baghurst I would encourage them to pursue both. Ideally they are already in at least one other sport outside of the one I coach. Working out logistics would be case specific, in general though I would encourage the athlete to pursue both sports.

[Florida Coaches Coalition @PayFLCoaches]

The @FHSAA has repeatedly said that the wage issue that coaches in Florida face is a "school district issue."

When officials in Florida threatened to strike in 2020, the FHSAA stepped in and gave them a raise. When 31 other states approved high school NIL, the FHSAA came out with a statement that they were drafting proposed NIL Language.

What the FHSAA has never done is publicly make a statement that stood in solidarity with ALL coaches in Florida seeking higher pay. The FHSAA is fully aware that ALL public high school coaches are paid well below minimum wage.

It would make all the difference if the governing body of high school sports in Florida finally made a stance in support of ALL Florida coaches.

Coaches in Florida produce more Division I talent than any other state in this country, yet they are paid the least. Most coaches do it for the passion, not the paycheck... BUT... the $1.00 an hour coaches average in Florida won't cut it anymore.
