The strangest thing about having a kid is that you suddenly have a physical extension of yourself out there in the world. When they feel joy, you feel joy. When they feel pain, you feel pain. But unlike with yourself, you aren’t really in control of what they experience. And if you try to be, it probably won’t work out all that well. So it really is the ultimate test of faith. Just letting go and trusting that you’ve prepared them for whatever they’ll face. Or that they’ll learn to adapt to it. Terrifying in a lot of ways. But enormously gratifying, too. Nobody really teaches you how to navigate it. And there’s nothing else like it in your life.

Bijan Robinson says NIL money can make young players think they no longer have to work or listen

“At Texas, they were always telling me, ‘Yo B, go out, bro. Have fun.’ Obviously, as college kids, we did a little bit of fun, but with me, I was so locked in.”

“They were always like, ‘Why don’t you come out?’ But then on the flip side they’re always like, ‘Damn B, I want to be where you’re at.’ I’m like, ‘You’ve got to make a choice.’ It’s always good to have fun. You have to have fun in college and experience it.”

“But at the same time, you have to be so focused and locked in and understand, especially in my position, I was trying to do big things and make it as high as I possibly could. As much as I love it for kids, they’re starting to get paid all this money and then their mentality becomes so shot.”

“They’re like, ‘I have money. I can do this. I don’t have to work as hard.’ I saw a video on TikTok the other day, and it was this college kid yelling at his coach in camp. He was like, ‘Bro, I don’t have to listen to you. I got all this money. I don’t got to listen.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s a different world. What?’ I would’ve got ripped. I would’ve got kicked off the team.”

“For me to explain that to kids now, I’m like, ‘Bro, you have to go to college for relationships and the relationship with the coaches.’ It’s cool to get money. You will get money if you perform the right way.”
