Ian O’Riordan: The Enhanced Games are fast becoming a running joke
It is already a dangerous and darkly cynical take on modern sport, and it cannot be a lasting one

A new meta-analysis on the impact of goal setting on performance found:
1. Process goals had a large effect on performance
2. Performance goals had a moderate effect
3. Outcome goals had a negligible effect
If we want track to survive in the NCAA, we need to go back to a more local model.
The flying across the country for qualifying model is going to lead to our demise.
We've got at least be closer to other sports, even given our team size differences.
The 5 Rules of Training:
1. The boring stuff is your foundation
2. Let it Come, Don’t Force it.
3. Take the Next Logical Step
4. You lose what you don’t train
5. Train the individual, not the system

Parent: "What does my son need to do to get more playing time?"
Me: "He needs to show up on time, know his plays, fight for reps in practice, be academically eligible, and give his absolute best!"
Parent: "Apart from that, what can he do?"

Leadership is easy.
Until…
You have to hold someone accountable.
You’re criticized for doing the right thing.
You face a tough decision with no easy answer.
You take the blame for a mistake you didn’t make.
You lead people who don’t want to be led.
You’re expected to stay calm in chaos.
You sacrifice for the good of the team.
Leadership isn’t about a title. It’s about showing up when it’s hard.
That’s when real leaders stand out.
Choose to lead.
This is one of my favorite speeches of all time…
It always hits me hard:
“You get up every day—you’re entitled to nothing. Nobody owes you nothing. You could have talent, but if you don’t have discipline, and you don’t execute, you don’t focus… What do you get? Nothing. If you’re complacent and not paying attention to detail… What does that get you? Nothing. So nothing is acceptable but your best.”
This is a harsh reality of life:
Talent is meaningless without discipline.
Ambition is worthless without execution.
Focus is the difference between potential and reality.
You’re not entitled to success—it’s earned in the quiet, thankless moments when no one is watching.
The antidote to entitlement is relentless ownership.
Show up fully. Pay attention to the details. Do your best—every single day.
Because in a world where everyone wants the reward, it’s those who refuse to accept anything less than their best who build something worth being proud of.
You don’t need to be the smartest person in the room. You need to be the one who shows up. Who stays true to their word. Who can figure it out. Who does the boring things well. Who takes pride in their work. Who is reliable. The old fashioned things never go out of style.
Kobe on Leadership:
"Leadership is Lonely. If you are going to be a leader, you are not going to please everybody. You have to hold people accountable. Even if you have that moment of being uncomfortable."
