It's 1981 at @UTAustin and @TexasFootball's Kenneth Sims is making ends meet by pumping gas.🏈⛽️ #HookEm
AUSTIN, TX 1981 (@fox7austin) — Today's college football players, lounging in luxury facility suites and signing six-figure NIL deals before ever taking a snap, truly have no idea how good they have it.
Archival footage from the FOX 7 Austin Video Vault shows Texas Longhorns defensive tackle Kenneth Sims during his summer break. He isn't flashing cash, shooting commercials, or signing autographs for a paycheck; he is spending his hot Texas summer working a regular shift pumping gas to make ends meet.
At 6-foot-6 and 265 pounds, Sims spent his off-season performing manual labor just to have pocket money for the upcoming semester. Yet, when autumn arrived, he put together one of the most dominant individual seasons in college football history.
Despite missing the end of the year due to injury, Sims captained the 1981 Longhorns to a number 2 national ranking, became UT’s first-ever winner of the Lombardi Award, finished eighth in the Heisman voting, and was ultimately selected as the number 1 overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft.
Before the era of private jets, transfer portals, and corporate sponsorships, even the best player in America had to earn his keep one gallon at a time.
As a coach, be the man you demand your players to be.
Be on time.
Be prepared
Be tough.
Coach every rep.
Know your role.
Know the scheme.
Work out.
Accept rebuke.
Hold your players to a high standard & yourself to a higher one. Players know if you are who you say you are. Lead.

John Harbaugh said, "The only failure in life is not getting back up. When you get knocked down and stay down then you're a failure. But you're never a failure if you get back up."
"The only person who can make you quit is yourself."
Resilience is choosing to persist.
“Never give up. Always fall back to your level of training. It’s all about mental toughness. That’s what’s going to get you through a game. Not 1 quarter, 2 quarters, 3 quarters all 60 minutes,” Jalen Milroe

I can't stop thinking about this question:
Are you willing to sprint when the distance is unknown?
In 2021, Georgia Tech strength coach Lewis Caralla delivered this epic speech to the football team.
If it doesn't get you motivated, you may need to check your pulse...
He opens with a few harsh truths:
• Winning isn't loyal to you
• Winning doesn't care about you
• Winning doesn't care how sore you are
• Winning doesn't care how hard you work
• Winning doesn't care how much sleep you get
But it's his question that stuck with me:
Are you willing to sprint when the distance is unknown?
The willingness to sprint with no clear view of the finish line is rare.
It requires two things:
1. A deep belief in one's self
2. A deep belief in the mission
If you have 1 but not 2, you won't be able to do it.
If you have 2 but not 1, you won't be able to do it.
You need both.
In my observation, the greatest things in life are accomplished when you're willing to sprint when the distance is unknown:
The sprint to care for your loved ones in their time of need.
The sprint to build something meaningful.
The sprint to serve others and create positive ripples in the world.
Goal: Find those rare things in life that you're willing to sprint for when the distance is unknown.
That, to me, is the definition of winning.
"And why chase winning? Because the only thing that's guaranteed in life if you don't chase it is losing."
"Today is the only important day of your life.
Yesterday is gone.
It will never change.
Tomorrow can only be affected by what you do in preparation today.
And failure to prepare is preparing to fail."
Every choice you make today shapes who you become tomorrow.
