System Design Round at Anthropic: Your RAG chatbot retrieves 20 documents per query and stuffs all of them into the prompt. Accuracy is fine.

But your token bill is 5x what you projected and latency is 4 seconds.

Half those 20 documents are barely relevant to the question.

How do you cut the context you send without dropping the answers that actually needed all 20?
