@naomicfisher I went back 8 yrs ago to retrain as a maths teacher. The whole system is broken but it's what we have. I personally think exams should be open book as we all walk around with a computer in our hands so, no need to memorise facts. Some colleges offer functional skills instead.

@marcusveniquis @naomicfisher @OpenUniversity Will they let you have functional skills instead? I retrained at 42 to teach maths. The adult learners I taught resit maths to faired much better than my 16 to 19 resit students. Maths in the main is rules it's taught very differently than when you and I first did it. 1/

@jamesstanifort8 @Shalbizzle @DavidNautilus1 2. My son was leaving to go to high school anyway. Other than that holiday he missed one day sick that term. We,ve never in 6 years taken them out in term time nor really in the 15 years of having kids there. Others take a week in many terms not fined. It was personal!

@jamesstanifort8 @Shalbizzle @DavidNautilus1 1. There are guidelines that they follow but basically it's down to the school. We got fined last year but only 1 school not both. We went to America to see family force wks end of summer term not to save money but to see 4th July. Head was annoyed at me for unrelated event.

@RogersHistory Flexibility is definitely a huge issue. I've retrained in my 40s but I only want to work part time. This has ruled out school working. So I am self employed working in football clubs teaching resit maths. I drive past about 4 high schools all of which want maths teachers!

@Just_Maths We assess students as they arrive at college and look at GCSE grade. If lower than a 3 they do functional skills. We try to go no lower than entry 3 but I have taught entry 2. Resources are limited I find though.

@Just_Maths Not sure if mines relevant but I teach resit maths learners in a small alternative college. It does frustrate me slightly that non of our local schools seem to offer functional skills. I see students who would never pass GCSE having had to do it for 2 years.

@paulanthodson @KingBobIIV @lolaloubob Yes I've said the same, it needs to be highlighted it goes both ways. My step dad left after 32 years this summer I tried over the years to intervene but people just see the women as bossy. mum thinks she's the victim as he walked out. He's living his best life but is now 70.

@KingBobIIV @lolaloubob It isn't just women though, my step dad just left after 32 years of this. It's dreadful whichever sex. I tried over the years to step in but my mum doesn't think she is doing anything wrong and he was too frightened/controlled to leave. He's currently living his best life at 70.

@PESSPAprimary @Emma_Turner75 As a parent and teacher I would rather finish closer to Christmas have have longer off the other side. I hate it when you go back on 3rd, kids are tired after all family stuff. We finish Fri, any term longer than 6 weeks the kids are fading.

@LibraVerity @tombennett71 I'm relatively newly qualified too,teach resit maths to 16+. We were told bad behaviour was a consequence of bad planning and uninteresting lessons. Not tat there's no consequence for anything at college. One of the trainees asked me if it was because I was female teaching maths!

@jonchristophe I teach only resit maths but at an alternative provider, our policy is that unless they have a 3 they don't redo GCSE. In fact this year my year 2 student did FS 2 after the GCSE as a back up. Got level two but not GCSE. With FS they can see progress. We even do entry level

@Katy_primary97 I'm 30th August and was fine .my daughter was 29th July and struggled. My son is June we deferred a year he's 11. I have a 3rd sept one who was due aug. X

@tes @HKorbey 2. In the end we have decided to let him skip y6 and go to high school when he normally would have. He just going to miss the sats prep year thank goodness! I believe we made the correct decision delaying a year but he's bright and emotionally developed now. I'm a teacher too.

@tes @HKorbey 1. We deferred our son who was June born. He wasn't emotionally ready for school. He is 11 now and in year 5.We have found is the process for high school hadn't been worked through. They wanted us to apply for high school then defer that too but no one said so we applied late.

@FSMathsFocus The frustrating thing is the past paper paper exam I don't think reflect the online exams. We teach Edexcel. I also wish the online tests were actually marked!

@StengelKai @FSMathsFocus Anyone who gets less than a three starts on functional skills, if they got a really low grade plus on our initial assessment we even teach entry level. They then work through. If not doing GCSE they would start at level 1 then move to level 2. The jump from 1 to 2 is hard
