The world Dolly Parton grew up in (ballad traditions, oral storytelling, etc.) doesn’t exist anymore. We shouldn’t romanticise its poverty, but that world preserved the Appalachian folk music she, more than anyone, helped popularise. Her passing severs a link to that lost world.
