Today marks 190 years since Edward Henty invaded the land now known as Portland and established the first permanent European settlement in Victoria.
This started an unbroken line of injustice for First Peoples, which continues to this day.
The Gunditjmara people resisted the theft of their land and frontier violence.
The Gunditjmara people had been tending to the land for thousands of years through sophisticated aquaculture techniques that can still be seen at the Budj Bim UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Edward Henty’s arrival 190 years ago set off a chain of events which devastated First Peoples and has not been reconciled today.
Truth-telling has never been more important than now.

@Asher_Wolf There are so many photos of me holding my baby awkwardly. She was so long and gangly and I was so paralysed by fear that we looked ridiculous.
The centre has left the poor behind, and calling them stupid or racist isn’t gonna help. The same will happen in Australia in 2025. Labor will get slammed on the economy and then blame the greens while secretly thinking the working poor are stupid. They’ll get what they deserve
This US election was a referendum on privilege. The privileged can look past the ‘dire’ economy because it only marginally affects their day to day. The poor can look past the eroding of civil liberties and rights because they need to put food on the table. 1/2
@MatthewBevan It’s such a double edged sword. We got our 8 yr old a dummy phone so she could control her own Spotify and now we’re listening to Christmas music in October
@glengyron I was last there over 10 years ago and it was hectic then, I can’t imagine how bad it’s got now. I always felt like Kyoto particularly suffered from the clash between the domestic tourism style and international and could never really reconcile it, perhaps by design
