It's not just smoke. Non-tobacco nicotine dependence is associated with infection, revision, mortality, and postoperative complications in primary THA.
Do you screen for nicotine? @collinblackburn@sam_florentino@mdSchwarzkopf@rhk_md

@BrianElliottMD1@jbcarmody There’s no doubt that med student research is a racket. But how else is a student supposed to differentiate themselves for residency? We’ve already done away with preclinical grades, AOA, Step 1 scores, and in some instances clinical grades.

In #CORR, @collinblackburn et al. found that THA for avascular necrosis, hip dysplasia, posttraumatic arthritis & conversion arthroplasty were associated w/increases in resource use, prolonged length of stay & discharge to a nonhome location. #orthoTwitter https://t.co/DLEDSFwpeC
After finding no difference in inpatient hospital costs of conversion THA & revision THA, @collinblackburn et al. call on orthopaedic surgeons to advocate for the reclassification of conversion THA, or run the risk of decreased reimbursement. #orthoTwitter https://t.co/UirTLaeyl3
Excited to announce that I’m going to OrthoCarolina for fellowship training in Adult Recon! Many thanks to my outstanding mentors at Case who have helped me along the way. Can’t wait for the next step!

@residencyreview @acgme According to this graphic, the hardest working residents are only doing 60-80hrs per week. I’d say things aren’t that bad. Could be a lot worse.
@bfhermann@bridget__marc This is a tragedy. Stress at work may contribute suicide, but it’s unfair to blame any suicide on external struggles alone. It conceals the mental health factors as if they were shameful. We must normalize struggles w/ mental health, even among residents & other high achievers
Happy to share our latest in CORR! Compared w/ OA, THA for AVN, DDH, posttraum arthritis & conversion arthroplasty are associated w/ a stepwise hierarchy of cost. Posttraum arthritis & conversions had 22% & 40% ⬆️ costs. @Clinorthop#orthotwitter

Pleased to share our latest pub in @Clinorthop. Despite being classified & reimbursed as a primary sgy, conversion THA w/ removal of hardware has the same cost as revision THA. It’s time for conversion THA to be reclassified as a revision. @orthotwitter

@BrianElliottMD1@jbcarmody@JournalofGME Capping research may help students focus on meaningful clinical experiences. But w/ no step 1 grades, no preclinical grades, & declining participation in AOA, capping research will also decrease students’ ability to differentiate themselves in a field of well qualified applicants
