I just watched Jon Rahm’s interview with Pat MacAfee and here’s my take on why he went to LIV:

1. He assumes he’ll be back on the PGA Tour any ways in 2-3 years with $300M more in the bank

2. He has no concerns about not qualifying in the majors considering how high his world rank is and exemptions from winning the Masters and US Open.

3. He believes the Ryder Cup will change their rules by the time 2025 comes around (funny enough Rory already campaigned for this yesterday).

So besides a change in public opinion , he’ll still compete for majors, be back on the PGA Tour in a couple years, try to retain the Ryder Cup on US soil, and create generational, once in a lifetime wealth for his family.

It’s not being spoken about enough, how abhorrent it is that the PGA Tour leadership invoked a narrative of hate and prejudice, weaponising 9/11, and then, did a complete u-turn to justify taking the money when it suited themselves.

12 months ago, they could have said “we understand why players are going, but we’re going to improve our own product to make you stay”. Instead, they divided golf, filled it with hatred and colluded with other governing bodies in an attempt to ruin players careers and force fans to choose.

This behaviour is completely unacceptable and the people involved need to be removed from leadership immediately. The sport cannot move forward peacefully with them in charge.
