@ringer@tribecalledlex_ The absolute ignorance of the technical aspects of the sport displayed in this piece simply beggars belief. How is this person a journalist?
@markalanpeter @cvaldary I hear what you’re saying. I do find McGilchrist’s The Master and Its Emissary instructive here though, especially given the rise of AI.
@markalanpeter @cvaldary I’m not anti-reason. I teach inductive thinking and evidence-based writing to university students, after all. But if “hyper rational” means anything it means a reductive approach to value questions. Also, there’s clearly room for intuition, even in hard science.
@markalanpeter @cvaldary As I understand it, “hyper rationality” means assuming ratiocination can solve every problem of living. In theory, then, an AI with sufficient logical capacity could better direct our lives than we could ourselves.
@Plinz@Quillette I think you’re right. The word count restricted me from delving into the metaphysics/question of consciousness in the film as much as I’d have liked.
@Quillette I would go a step further: Pixar don't see the core of being at identity (costume and social role), personality (habitus), or story (values and actions). They see it at consciousness itself, in the ability to experience suffering, joy and meaning, and to observe and understand.
omg, @CaitlinPacific with @SamHarrisOrg re: Harvard laying off its most vulnerable staff while taking bailout cash
SAM: How is this not just a brand-destroying scandal?
CAITLIN: Because it's a luxury brand. It's not a college. It's Tiffany's. It's Van Cleef and Arpels.
