Sell-by dates on groceries might be past their prime.
At the start of July, California became the first state to ban public-facing sell-by dates, and other states are following close behind.
California’s move is two fold, banning sell-by dates and reducing the over 50 date labels a shopper might see in the grocery store to just two. Shoppers in the Golden State will now see a ‘Best if used by’ date for peak quality, and ‘Use by’ date for product safety.
Experts hope removing date label confusion can help cut down on food waste. Thirty-one percent of food in the U.S. is wasted according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Date label confusion is estimated to contribute to 3.5 million tons of food going to waste, per year.
PBS News’ @timmcphillips3 spoke to Sara Burnett, executive director of ReFED, a nonprofit working to end food waste, and Carla Schwan, associate professor and food safety specialist at the University of Georgia, to break down the potential expiration of sell-by dates and how you can save your food and your money.
I’m Dr Ahmed, a Muslim consultant psychiatrist. For more than 10 years, I’ve worked over Xmas so colleagues who celebrate can be with their loved ones. I’m on call again this year in emergency psychiatry. Thanks to all frontline staff working over the festive period. Merry Xmas.
Heading into the new year, where lots of people aim to lose weight, let me share with you as someone who is both a doctor and has lost 150+lbs and kept it off:
Fad diets, ‘miracle’ supplements, and going from 0 to 60 at the gym don’t work long term.
Right now, I’m sitting in a hospital room with my dad, who had open heart surgery yesterday to repair a valve.
His doctor walked in and said his insurance company tried to deny his care yesterday, she told them it was too late, he was already in surgery.

first time i went to bf's house, saw a picture of his son and his kinder teacher in a frame. i picked it up and said, "aw, this is so sweet" and then i noticed there was a *phone number* on the back.
he was like "oh yeah, she really liked my kid!"
....my sweet summer child.
I say I voted for Kamala. People assume I’m a progressive.
I show that I’m upset about the election results. I’m told to repent and called a shrill liberal.
I’m a moderate. I’m a Christian who is conservative theologically, and in a denomination that is traditional. I’ve been a believer for over 25+ years and I have a lot of clout as a Christian in my circles. I’m well educated and been around the block a few times.
Yes, I voted for Kamala. But, not for the reasons you assume.
I voted for Kamala not because she’s a woman. Not because she’s black. But, because she’s qualified. She did not pose a threat to national security. She has never been convicted of crime. She’s never been accused of SA. She is a strong communicator, and I believe she would have brought some stability to our country. How? Through her presence. You can disagree, totally fine. But, that’s why I voted for her.
I don’t agree with all her policies, but I did think she would have made a good president. And yes, I’m disappointed that Trump was elected. I’m sad. People are allowed to be upset that their candidate lost. People are allowed to work through that frustration and express themselves.
I’ve made a point to not make this platform about politics. My heart is to help people leave cultic, coercive, and spiritually abusive relationships. I love kindness, and I want to see people united over good causes. I’m at my heart a peace maker who desires unity.
I don’t intend to continue to make political posts, but if my beliefs bother you-please, just unfollow me.
If you feel the same way I do about abuse, cults, and education - please stay. That is the heartbeat of my platform. Give me a few days to settle my soul, I just ask for your understanding and patience if you find my tweets to be insufferable.
the number of dudes in my mentions talking about "this is why men don't get married" don't seem to be able to explain why after divorce men are almost twice as likely to remarry 🧐
Wow. Some universities say they’ll stop pronouncements on big public issues. On NPR, the president of Wesleyan asserts they’re “abdicating responsibility” to lead discussion—and says they were “pricing in a Trump victory” and guarding against retribution.

A really wild thing is happening in Utah right now. Our state Constitution allows citizens, with incredible effort, to occasionally put a Measure on the ballot to vote in a law. In recent years, the majority of voters in our state have voted to legalize medical marijuana use,
hi, everyone. *takes a deep breath*
i am getting divorced. this is unexpected and devastating. but i am slowly & surely moving through the stages of grief as i navigate what is next for my children and me. this is not what i wanted, nor how i thought my life would go.
I want to quickly highlight a completely bonkers part of Trump's Project 2025 agenda relating to your salary and faith. You have to see this stuff in text to understand the degree to which these extreme MAGA types want to control your life.
He needs to step aside!!
Me: [And then what?]
And then we pick someone new!
[Who? How do you pick?]
It’s easy, we just pick Kamala.
[What about the folks who don’t want Kamala? What about the ones who want Gavin or Pete or someone else?]
Umm. Well…
[What about the folks who want to keep Biden?]
Umm. I…
[What if the red states wont change the ballots?]
Wait, can they do that?
[What if the Supreme Court won’t force them to?]
I’m not saying it’s not a risk, I’m just saying we need to talk about it.
[We just talked about it.]
This is every single conversation I’ve had on this app with every entitled elitist or grudge-carrying fool who clearly has the time for fanciful musings when the rest of us do not.
It’s a waste of everyone’s time. It’s not helpful. It’s not practical. It’s not even fucking possible. So, put your big boy pants on, stock the fuck up on some Celsius, settle back into reality, join those of us who don’t have the luxury of dream scenario silliness and fight for the candidate we can actually help to defeat our collective enemy, or sit the fuck down, shut the fuck up and get out of the goddamn way.
There was a car with a flat tire at the trailhead today. “That sucks” I thought and started on my run. Passed two Gen-Z chicks coming down the canyon about two miles in. The car with the flat was the only other car at the trailhead so it must be theirs. “That sucks” I thought and kept on about my run. I got back about an hour later and the two chicks are sitting in their car, doors open, all distraught.
“Are you alright?” I asked.
“Yeah… we’re fine… we’re just… it’s fine” the girl in the driver’s seat replies with wide eyes like I’m definitely a serial killer.
It was clearly not fine.
“You have a plan to get down?”
“Yeah, we’ll call someone.”
There’s no cell service for 10 miles in any direction.
“Do you have a spare?” I asked.
“Uhm, I’m not sure. It’s fine” she replies.
It’s a 2016/17-ish Honda HR-V. The spare tire is under the cargo floor.
“You do. I can put it on for you if you want.”
The two chicks stare at each other. “Uhm… no, that’s ok” the driver says to the passenger in the tone of a question.
“You sure? It will take me ten minutes” I said insistently but trying not be a creep.
The two chicks stare at each other some more. (They clearly would have chosen the bear.)
“Or I can call the ranger when I get down to Pasadena.”
The two chicks stare at each other some more. They whisper in girl code. They look me up and down. They stare back at each other. The passenger finally speaks: “uhm, so… would you mind helping us change the tire?”
“Yeah, it’s no problem.”
I have them open the cargo. They dug out enough hiking supplies to hike the PCT.
“You have enough gear to survive out here for a week” I joked.
The two chicks stared at each other. They looked at me. They looked back at each other. In girl code they agreed it’s safe to chuckle. “Hehe, yeah” one of them says.
By the time I got the car lifted, they had let their guard down a little and thanked me “seriously so so so so much.” They told me they had no idea how to change a tire. They’ve never had to change a tire before but one of them did have a dead battery once in college and had to have her dad drive over an hour to come give her a jump.
Ten minutes later, the tire was changed and they seemed genuinely surprised I didn’t kill them. They thanked me again “seriously so so so so much” and assured me that I “have no idea, omg” and then they were on their way.
It made realize how much it sucks to be a woman where every man is a threat until proven otherwise. I don’t blame them for being cautious, but I do blame them for venturing into the mountains with $1000 worth of REI products, but no clue how to change a tire.
Teach your daughters how to change a tire ffs!
It is 87 degrees outside and I am melting in this courtroom. I said, “Judge may we approach?” Co-counsel and I walk to the bench and I said, “Your Honor my 51 years is showing. I am about to faint it is so hot.” Judge, “Oh. My bad. I had a chill. I flipped the heat on.”
You did what sir?!
