Maybe the guy's students are quiet because they don't want to run afoul of a professor whose fundamental view of Western culture is that it is/was 'extractive' and 'colonialist'. My kids' friends seem to have better bullshit detectors and appreciation for nuance than I did at their age. Having that viewpoint force fed to them at every turn might be the reason.
As the kids say, "It's not that deep." The Grand Tour was fashionable, Let's Go Europe was fashionable, and so was Khao San Road. Unless human nature has changed without us noticing, there will still be a youthful impulse to go somewhere cool, meet new people, and party with them.
