Maybe the guy's students are quiet because they don't want to run afoul of a professor whose fundamental view of Western culture is that it is/was 'extractive' and 'colonialist'. My kids' friends seem to have better bullshit detectors and appreciation for nuance than I did at their age. Having that viewpoint force fed to them at every turn might be the reason.

As the kids say, "It's not that deep." The Grand Tour was fashionable, Let's Go Europe was fashionable, and so was Khao San Road. Unless human nature has changed without us noticing, there will still be a youthful impulse to go somewhere cool, meet new people, and party with them.

My college sophomore daughter messaged me yesterday. There's so much demand for the study abroad program she's interested in that she's afraid she won't be accepted.

A friend of mine and I tested translation to/from French and Greek. Then tried some little Python script problems.

A week later I had scheduled lunch with my old VC fund GP's and told them their CEO's had better start running scared ASAP. Generally speaking they didn't listen and are now starting to really feel the pain.

There have only been a few times in my life when I saw tech that I was certain would change the world: the IBM PC, the Netscape Browser, the iPhone, and ChatGPT.

I'll admit to a lot of skepticism before opening it though - I interviewed someone recently who started out as a practitioner and eventually ended up running a large chain of treatment centers here in the U.S. and I know what he would say.

And for every person like you (I presume) and Guy, who manage to get themselves into treatment and stay there successfully, there are probably 100 who won't or can't. The evidence is clear (even if it's unpleasant) that compulsion is required.

But the philosophy and practice of harm reduction does nothing to compel people to move to treatment and eventually take care of themselves. And it harms the rest of us.
