Every religion-related discourse on this platform reminds me of the deep, deep ignorance the Western secular mind lives in vis-à-vis orthodoxy. Most have no theory of mind for how a devout person actually conceives of things. None. They think they know, but they don’t — I’ve yet to meet a secular Westerner who can model Oriental religious dogma with even remotely correct accuracy. (I say oriontal, and it reminds me of that youtube video arguing that Islam could be labled a western religion just as well....)

The opposite is not true at all. I am muslim, and western liberal secularism has no secrets for me; I know how it works from the inside — the hows, the whys, all of it. Internet monoculture and globalisation made liberal spheres trivial to navigate for us all, I think. So when I argue with it, I manage to argue from within it, not like some ignorant, obtuse outsider lobbing rocks at a thing he’s never quite understood. (which is what most westerners commenting on orthodox muslim behaviour sounds like to me)

At the end of the day, I find western leftism to lack taste for the actually oriental, no stomach for its religious substance, which is ironic, given what “woke” is supposed to be about. This is probably less true in academic circles, as rigeour tends to get you closer to a proper model of the oriontal mind.
