Iโve been thinking about this for a while and honestlyโฆ tech is confusing ๐ญ
Imagine this.
Youโve been a senior engineer for years.
Not โwatched 200 tutorialsโ senior.
I mean REAL senior.
Youโve:
- shipped products
- fixed production bugs at 2am
- mentored juniors
- survived impossible deadlines
- argued with product managers
- said โit works on my machineโ with confidence
Basicallyโฆ battle-tested.
Now one day you wake up and decide:
โHmmโฆ let me learn something new.โ
Maybe:
- a React Native developer moving to SwiftUI
- a Java engineer learning Rust
- a backend engineer entering mobile development
After months of learning, building projects, and confusing yourself daily
You now want to apply for jobs in that new stack.
Hereโs where my brain starts overheating.
Do you still put โSenior Engineerโ on your resume?
Or do you humble yourself and become junior again?
Because letโs be honestโฆ
A senior React developer can enter SwiftUI and suddenly start fighting for their life over:
- Xcode errors from another dimension
- provisioning profiles
- memory management
- โwhy is this modifier affecting the whole view?โ
- Apple documentation written like ancient scrolls
Meanwhile the junior iOS developer with 2 years experience is looking at you like:
โbro doesnโt even know UIViewControllerRepresentableโ ๐ญ
But at the same timeโฆ
Can we really call someone with 10 years engineering experience a โjuniorโ just because they switched ecosystems?
That same person already understands:
- architecture
- debugging
- scaling
- clean code
- working in teams
- handling pressure
- how software actually works
Those things donโt disappear overnight.
So what really defines seniority?
Experience in software engineering as a whole?
Or years inside one specific stack?
And if you were switching stacks today
Would you still apply as a senior engineer?
Or would you start from junior/mid-level again?
I genuinely feel like the industry doesnโt even agree on the answer.

This stuff that's going around, I feel it's largely misinterpreted. Remember, Moniepoint isn't just a software company, it also builds hardware. And Tosin may be referring to the actual hardware development, etc
Let's not be quick to jump into conclusions.

Once upon a time, the Lion became hungry and he said to the fox: '
The fox went to a donkey and said: '๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ ๐๐ผ ๐บ๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด, ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐บ๐ฒ.'
When the Lion saw the donkey, it attacked her, cutting off its ears, but the donkey managed to escape. The donkey said to the fox: '๐ฌ๐ผ๐ ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐บ๐ฒ!
The fox said: '๐๐ผ๐ป'๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐น๐น๐!
It made sense to the donkey, so it went back.
The Lion attacked the donkey again, this time cutting off its tail! The donkey escaped again, saying to the fox: '
The fox convinced the donkey to return again.
This time, the Lion caught the donkey and killed it.
The Lion said to the fox: '๐ช๐ฒ๐น๐น ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฏ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ป๐ธ๐ฒ๐.
The fox skinned the donkey, and ate the donkeys brain, but brought back its lung, liver and heart to the Lion. The Lion became angry and asked: '
The fox replied: '
The Lion said: '๐ง๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฒ.'
Moral of the the story:
Donโt be like the donkey ๐.
This is how the foxes keep convincing the donkeys in Nigeria at every election since 1999.

The halo effect. We put people too much on a high pedestal.
Nonetheless, they're humans regardless - and just as entitled to their opinions as us.
We shouldn't throwaway their accomplishments just because of their personal opinion on a particular subject matter.
We should learn how to separate the genius from the madness. Humans are multifaceted.
When Tech Bros that you respect and have built reputable companies starts speaking publicly on issuesโฆ they will basically lose their magicโฆ
Most of them are still respected because they do not speakโฆ itโs mysteryโฆ
