“Let us never forget the solemn truth that the nation is not constituted of the living alone. There are those as well who have passed away and those yet to be born. So this great responsibility comes to us as heirs of the past and trustees of the future.” - Sir Robert Borden
@randyhillier@FortySacks The Loyalists had to intentionally build what they came to have, including the institutions and polity you and I still benefit from. They were then, as thanks, vilified by the vindictive radicals whose polemics and left-liberal historiography you’re inexplicably repeating here.
@randyhillier@FortySacks Because your foundational claim was:
“Many saw Upper/Lower Canada as means to **keep these lucrative government positions** and fled north.”
I’m showing that’s not the case. Most Loyalists have up a great deal and were handed little alongside an uncertain future.
@randyhillier@FortySacks I’m familiar with the geography. That’s why I asked the question—one you’ve left unanswered to echo Grit rhetoric. Most of their settlements now on the map were carved out of the forest in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and southern Ontario. They didn’t go from comfort to comfort.
@randyhillier@FortySacks In what harbours, customs houses, and courts, Mr Hillier? Most gave up what they had to spend years hacking down bush on their new land grants. If they loved position over principle, why would they have stayed loyal in the first place?
Our fair Dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound.
May peace forever be our lot,
And plenteous stores abound.
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever,
And flourish green o’er freedom’s home
The maple leaf forever!
@pegobry_en I don’t often disagree with you, M. Gobry, but I doubt the world would be more Soviet had the template for modern, mass, and ideological revolutions failed. 1917 is quite directly downstream from 1776, via 1789.
@DirtyLeg79 And, even if it did, wouldn’t terrorists murdering cabinet ministers pretty clearly count as domestic enemies? What a strange post that is.
