The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. Sadly, the persistent rise in insecurity across Nigeria shows that this fundamental duty is not being adequately fulfilled.
While government must take the lead, addressing this challenge requires the collective efforts of security agencies, state governments, traditional rulers, community leaders, women, youth groups, and all well-meaning Nigerians.
The growing threat of urban banditry is a particular issue of concern. What was once largely confined to rural communities is gradually making its way into our towns and cities. If immediate and decisive action is not taken, urban banditry could become one of the most dangerous security challenges facing the nation, with serious consequences for public safety, economic activities, and national stability.
This is not a challenge Nigeria can afford to ignore. The time for urgent and coordinated action is NOW.

The June 2026 conflict data reveal a crisis that cannot be ignored.
Nigeria recorded 96 lethal conflict incidents, resulting in 400 fatalities. The North West accounted for 44.8% of all recorded incidents, while banditry remained the leading driver of violence, accounting for 52.1% of all incidents. The religious profile of the fatalities shows that 319 were Muslims (79.8%) and 81 were Christians (20.2%).
These figures demonstrate the continuing human cost of insecurity and emphasize the urgent need for stronger civilian protection, coordinated security responses, and sustained efforts to prevent further loss of life.
Every statistic represents a life lost. Every fatality deserves attention.
