@crossbordercap Try substitute the word 'debt' with 'private savings' and try again, then ask ChatGPT: why does the US borrow its own currency while it also prints it, and why do we pay interest?". You might learn something.
@gypsy_nilima@riteshmjn BRIC and dev nation citizens ripped off by US elites with US citizens joining the craze, shuffling more money to the elites they hate so much.
@cullenroche@profplum99@GestaltU@baldrkulder@Venturinglist For those over half of Americans who live paycheck to paycheck it is a deeply flawed system with a steep power gradient for affecting change. No wonder people reach for extremes. Change only happens during a crisis.
@charliebilello We need rates permanently at zero. There is no reason to continue this egregious wealth transfer to those in need of risk free collateral.
@DeepThroatIPO Isn't it so that when I buy an asset, the money ends up in the seller's bank account. It can't be in the market. And there is always lots more cash in the economy as there are treasuries. To spend over $1T in interest to those in need of risk free collateral....
@BurggrabenH So the guys who keep bombing this place to oblivion after they already destroyed everything, these guys are now the good guys, even though the entire international community testifies to the contrary?
@dampedspring We keep hearing that the situation is untenable, but the only solution offered is austerity - and we know this isn't working. The only place to cut deficit meaningfully is cutting rates to zero.
@btctmac@GoForGrubes2 It's bc the companies stashing BTC don't give a crap about the long term price evolution. They enrich themselves via stock options of their companies. F*** the Hodlers. That's just propaganda.
@dampedspring@patchat424eva The financial community keeps saying this, but I looked in vain for concrete evidence. What we know is that the alarm was sounded already for 30 years and nothing happened. Maybe this debt is just private savings as MMT has eloquently articulated.
@dampedspring I keep wondering why we pay interest at all. It's an egregious wealth transfer. Why do we suggest we borrow our own money? We don't. It had to be spent first to create the money needed to buy the bonds. It's a gift to those who need risk free collateral.
@SantiagoAuFund@TennisonEddie It is cheaper for us to give them cash and avoid the interest. Or we charge the bondholders for the risk free storage we offer them
@SantiagoAuFund@soclose2me Exactly, because our public debt does not matter. Whatever effect it had is already in the books. We need to stop paying interest as there is zero benefit. We never have to borrow our own currency from anyone.
@MMTmacrotrader Anything bad the debt might have done (inflation maybe) is already in the books. Public debt equals private savings. There is no reason for the gov to pay interest as the gov never needs to borrow it's own currency.
@dampedspring I keep struggling with this idea of investing money into an asset. The money always ends up in the bank account of the seller. The only alternative is a Treasury security as that temporarily removes the cash from the private economy.
@BobEUnlimited There is no way the government could have borrowed $36 trillion before it had spent it. The money would not have existed. Net private savings is the total outstanding debt.
