Worried by series of concerns raised by the people of Iloma, Okpukpo and Mimimah communities in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, Rivers State, over the threatening surge of ocean erosion which is almost washing away the existence of their communities, yesterday, Wednesday 31st May, 2023, we embarked on a working and verification visit to the affected areas to carry out assessments for rectification.

Accompanied by the State Director, Deputy Directors and Staff of the Rivers State office of the NDDC, we undertook an on-the-spot inspection tour of affected locations around the coastal communities, and assessed the site and state of the uncompleted Kalama shoreline protection contract which covers Iloma, Okpukpo and Minimah communities.

The community leadership led by Opusenibo Lasbrey Nelson Fubara representing Iloma, Warisenibo Francis Okpukpo representing Okpukpo and Amaopusenibo Edward Minimah representing Minimah communities, in their separate speeches expressed joy and hope over our visit.

They lamented that the shoreline protection contract which was awarded by the NDDC and intended to provide permanent solutions to the problem of ecological, environmental damage and flooding in their communities, and originally scheduled to last within a period of 16 months, sadly, has been abandoned for more than 10 years.

They decried the damaging impact of the non-completion of the project on the ancestry, lives, and businesses of the people.They further pleaded with the Commission to carry out urgent action to save the community from the verge of imminent extinction.

In my remarks, I appreciated the Chiefs, leadership, and people of the communities for the warm welcome accorded us, their show of love, level of interest, and commitment to the betterment of their people.

I assured them that having visited as a team and seeing first hand the nature of affected areas and taken note of the magnitude of the problem, appropriate recommendations will be made to the Executive Management and possibly to the Governing Board of the Commission for necessary and expedient intervention.
