A man spends 50 years teaching at MIT.
He knows his time is running out.
So he records one last lecture — everything he knows, distilled into a single hour.
He died 5 months later.
This is that lecture.

Analyzing a viral misinformation:
1. New Indian Express publishes an article in the print (and online) edition on August 23, 2023, where Hriday Ranjan reminisces over Reynolds pen and adds, "Upon enquiring, the shopkeeper informed me that Reynolds pens were no longer available in the market. The last few batches of the iconic Reynolds pen are available on Amazon, and I promptly ordered them."
2. An X/Twitter handle, 'memorable_90s', posts a day later, on August 24, 2023: "Reynolds 045 Fine Carbure will no longer be available in market, end of an era..💔". His source? Most obviously the New Indian Express article from the previous day, which was shared left, right, and center on Twitter/X. But he did not mention his source, of course, removing any context.
3. Reynolds clarifies that that they are not going out of the Indian market, both on their website and a newly created X/Twitter handle for this purpose (to target the platform that most circulated the misinformation)
Questions:
1. Why did the New Indian Express publish an opinion piece on August 23, 2023 (by Hriday Ranjan) that also mentions that Reynolds pens would no longer be available, based just on one shopkeeper's quip, without crosschecking that update from the company itself?
2. Why did the follow-up fact-checks, by publications like ABP and Moneycontrol (among others) not point to the New Indian Express article as the source of the misinformation, and focus only on the tweet/X post by 'memorable_90s', which, no doubt, went massively viral, but was posted on August 24, 2023, a day after the New Indian Express article?
Why did the so-called fact-checks not reach out to the 'memorable_90s' handle to know where they got that information from?
Bottomline:
1. Reynolds pens will continue to be available, as always.
2. The source of the misinformation here was mainstream media; print media, in particular - it was in the print edition of New Indian Express.
3. New Indian Express has not retracted that article (https://t.co/10stAA42ko) yet from the online version. It has not added a corrigendum either, so far.
