This is my understanding of the 3 different levels of building a voice agent in 2026.

As a customer, I've interacted with a few companies AI/Robot voice systems.

1. @Delta Full on Voice AI. Needed to add my kid to my flight. The voice AI quickly directed me to an online chat where I was able to do this 10/10 good stuff delta
2. @TMobile Full on Voice AI. Trying to troubleshoot my internet. AI wasn't able to understand my problem and direct me to the right department. 5/10
3. @Costco Still old school phone tree system, but it worked well, I got to the right department fast 7/10
4. My doctors office. Old school phone tree system. Pretty bad had to wait and listen to automated message even after I already knew what button to press to get to the right department 4/10
5. @Xfinity Full on Voice AI. This was terrible. I needed to repeat myself multiple time for it to understand me and I eventually just bailed to talk with human support 2/10

I’ve built a few AI voice agents recently, one to handle calls to insurance companies for medical clinics, so I’ve gone through a few iterations of tech stack. So far the best stack I’ve found for building your own agent is pipecat with Twilio https://t.co/VfLSxRYzdu which is great for handling a lot of the mundane stuff like handling interruption, streaming from STT -> LLM -> TTS and giving you a general framework to build around. Much better than building from scratch but gives you more control than using something like Retell and you can run it on your own servers.
