Seems like barred owls have slowly been crossing over the last couple decades (and genetic analyses from @ZachPeeryConBio 's lab will test this) and will probably continue. That's much more manageable than pop growth in the Sierras tho! 2/2

@KRNaturalPhoto @ecologyofgavin @CaliforniaDFW @ZachPeeryConBio Great question! I'd call the Pit River valley a "soft" barrier. CA SPOWs will occasionally cross it, and do so more than northern SPOW (there's a cool paper about this by Mark Miller et al. from @USGS_OR in 2018) ... 1/2
