The Primary: You pick exactly one candidate. This is completely safe.

The General (RCV): Ranking only one candidate is a massive risk. If your sole pick is eliminated, your ballot is "exhausted" (thrown out) and has zero say in the final rounds.

The 2022 Lesson
When Nick Begich was eliminated in the 2022 House race, ~11,000 voters who bullet-voted for him had their ballots exhausted. That handed the election to Mary Peltola, even though 60% of the initial vote went to Republicans.

The Bottom Line: You never have to rank candidates you hate, but ranking acceptable backups is the only way to ensure your ballot stays alive and actually influences the final outcome.
