The next one will be a crucial week in the European Parliament. Ursula von der Leyen will face her moment of truth on Thursday. Definitively one to watch!
Today, the European Commission revealed some details on the AI Office. It is essentially a repackaging of the old AI directorate. The Director will remain Lucilla Sioli. There will be five units for a total of 140 people - 80 of which still have to be recruited. 🧵 1/5
Historic!
The EU becomes the very first continent to set clear rules for the use of AI 🇪🇺
The #AIAct is much more than a rulebook — it's a launchpad for EU startups and researchers to lead the global AI race.
The best is yet to come! 👍
#AIAct trilogue: As EU policymakers prepare for this unexpected second round, a 🧵on the remaining dividing lines and the positions of the actors involved. Spoiler alert: Much will depend on co-rapporteur @brandobenifei and the EU Parliament's centre-left. 1/8

#AI Act trilogue: after more than 15 hours since the beginning of the meeting, EU policymakers are still discussing bans with no light at the end of the tunnel yet. Looks like the timing of the Council's, and maybe even Parliament's, press conferences was over-optimistic.
Today is D-day for the #AI Act. There is a lot of pressure to reach an agreement, and the stakes are very high. I have little doubt some sort of deal will be found, but there are several pitfalls to watch out for and constraints on all sides. A 🧵 on what you need to know. 1/12

Here is an incredibly comprehensive theoretical and experimental study of LK-99 with a definitive conclusion:
"Our synthesis and subsequent analysis of an LK-99 sample reveals a multiphase material that does not exhibit high-temperature superconductivity."
A comprehensive @voxdotcom explainer from @dylanmatt on the state of #AI policy in the US.
Never in history has so much precautionary regulation been preemptively proposed for any other technology.

Senders-pay: Italy's state secretary for digital, @AlessioButti_, called a possible EU initiative to make Big Tech chip in on telecom infrastructural costs 'premature', signalling a possible change of attitude compared to the previous government. @EURACTIV

Today we say goodbye to this great blue bird

EU is looking for a new Chief Economist & will launch a new job ad.
But will they reimpose the obligation that all candidates have an EU passport?
Answer: EC doesn't know yet. That'll be up decided in a chat between the Competition Commissioner & the HR department. /1
Professor Fiona Scott Morton has informed me of her decision to not take up the post as Chief Competition Economist. I accept this with regret and hope that she will continue to use her extraordinary skill-set to push for strong competition enforcement https://t.co/8WSmWYc4LV
