"I was disheartened and surprised to once again encounter this 'checking of papers' in the literary arts — a field I truly believed to be a liberal haven."

4) Be clear, not clever
Avoid nonsense words and technical jargon.
It slows down communication.
Choose words that are:
- Concise
- To the point
- Easy to understand
Don’t sound smart. Be efficient.

[John Bull @garius]

Editor's tip:

Take the second paragraph of your article and make it your first paragraph.

You'd got to the point by then.

Pro tip! "forgone" means to go without, "foregone" means to go before.

Forgone income (income you don't get for some reason)

A foregone conclusion (a result that can be predicted with certainty, as it it were made before)
