@skrrskrrsiggy@GMFinX I agree and I would be the first to advocate for that. But I also believe that people signed up for a degree and the debt that comes with it and it was their own decision so are not victims
@skrrskrrsiggy@GMFinX So predatory that you only have to pay it back once earning over a threshold, it has no impact on credit score and is wiped after 30 years. What checks would need doing? The only reason banks do checks is to make sure you’re good for the money, which is irrelevant in this case
@GMFinX@skrrskrrsiggy Oh okay my bad, I was going off where they said they have half the average student debt. So yes, they pay down around £50 a month, so they will never pay off the loan unless they overpay (which is an option) or earn more. But was this not expected?

@skrrskrrsiggy@GMFinX Yoy earn around £60k and pay back just over £200 a month right? That means you will have it paid off in 10-12 years. You are literally able to pay it back and if you weren’t then you don’t have to? I don’t get what the issue is? Why would a student loan be like a phone contract?
@GMFinX@skrrskrrsiggy The specific circumstances of the person I responded to owes around 24k and earns 60k. On a plan 2 loan that means they will pay around £230 a month and almost half will go towards paying down the debt
@MoDesigns12@GMFinX Literally! That’s how I always saw it 🤷♂️ Ideally it would be free (for some degrees) but everyone knew that wasn’t the case. I think a lot of graduates maybe see the big number and get scared. It makes me wonder how any of them have a degree when they can be so illogical lol
@GMFinX But before you signed up you knew that most people never pay it off because it makes no financial sense to? So what difference does the interest make? I don’t even really get why people look at it
