On 23 January 1943, Jan Karcz approached the camp manager of Auschwitz I Hans Aumeier. He asked to be released to the camp after a six-month sentence at the Penal Company. On the same day, he was imprisoned in a bunker in Block 11 & two days later he was shot.

27 November 1941 | 70 Polish men deported from a prison in Lublin were registered in Auschwitz. No. 23569 was given to Colonel Jan Karcz. Before the war, he was the head of the Cavalry Department of the Ministry of Military Affairs.

He became one of the leaders of the camp resistance. In 1942, at the request of Capt. Witold Pilecki, Karcz took the lead of the Military Organization at Birkenau.
