IFA President Francie Gorman is representing @COPACOGECA today at the European Commission meeting of the European Food
Security & Crisis preparedness and response Mechanism (EFSCM).
Today the Working Party on Research & Innovation had a valuable exchange with @DarioNardella on the future of Horizon Europe and the European Competitiveness Fund.
We shared a common vision: placing agriculture and food security at the heart of a stronger, more competitive Europe, driven by innovation and resilience.
The EU Institutions need to fully recognise the sector's potential to contribute to Europe's strategic objectives!

Important meetings yesterday in Brussels of Copa President, @masgiansanti with Executive Vice-President @RaffaeleFitto and Commissioner @OliverVarhelyi. A crucial opportunity to reaffirm that, now more than ever, agriculture and food security are integral to Europe’s overall security and resilience !
The decisions taken in the coming months both in the immediate and long term will shape the future of the European farming and rural areas.
European farming needs actions on:
🔻Fertilisers
🔻A strong CAP within the next MFF
🔻Concrete progress with the EU Omnibus simplification agenda and effective Plant Protection Products, access to innovation such as drones and NGTs, science based and economic approach to animal welfare.
Europe must equip its agricultural sector with the resources, stability and tools necessary to face current and future crises.
Copa President @masgiansanti and Cogeca Vice-President Florentin Bercu met this afternoon with incoming Irish Presidency Minister @martinheydonfg 🇮🇪 and with Commissioner @MarosSefcovic 🇪🇺
2️⃣ high-level talks to underline the priorities of the farming community with the Irish Presidency and on trade, in particular:
🖍️For a strong #CAP, with an increased budget up to inflation. No cuts!
🖍️To present @COPACOGECA's positions on MFF/ CAP/ NRPP/ CMO/ European Competitiveness Fund
🖍️To ask rules-based trade and export opportunities for EU agri-food and a trade policy politically accountable and economically sustainable for farmers
🔴 #Mercosur is the test case: EU must control TRQs, enforce safeguards, mirror standards & monitor transparency !
This morning, ahead of the AGRIFISH Council meeting, COPA President @masgiansanti and COGECA Vice-President Florentin Bercu met with Cypriot Minister of Agriculture @riapan82 to discuss the key issues currently shaping the 🇪🇺 agricultural agenda.
The exchanges focused in particular on our assessment of the fertiliser action plan presented by the @EU_Commission last week, ongoing discussions on international trade and EU agreements, the concerning ILUC rules for soya, origin labelling and the need to allow flexibility in the rural development payments.
Our two representatives were very clear: on all these issues, and particularly on fertilisers there is an urgent need to act and to act now! At a time when global geopolitics is being reshaped, agriculture is at the heart of strategic priorities. Europe cannot limit its action to half-measures or simple monitoring mechanisms; it must take concrete action to support its agricultural sector today in order to prevent food crises tomorrow.
We found a minister who was both attentive and proactive. We now expect a strong response from Europe’s agriculture ministers.
Copa and Cogeca welcome the signing of the modernised #EUMexico 🇪🇺🇲🇽 agreement, building on a partnership that already works for agri-food trade and with hope of further improvement.
But hope must come with some caution: the 35,000t TRQ for Mexican honey 🍯is a real worry for EU beekeepers, especially given the cumulative impact of previous trade concessions.
To make this deal work in practice we count on EU and Mexican institutions to👇
✅ Protect GIs effectively on the ground
✅ Make SPS & animal welfare cooperation measurable
✅ Monitor TRQs and cumulative pressure on sensitive sectors
Good trade is built on trust, fairness and enforcement.
We cherish our close contacts with Mexican counterparts @CNAgropecuario and look forward to making this modernised agreement beneficial for agricultural producers on both sides🤝
We are sleepwalking into a full-scale food production crisis. Farmers cannot continue to produce affordable food when fertiliser and fuel are becoming unaffordable, and the European Commission’s response is to pile on more costs instead of removing barriers.
The suspension of tariffs on fertiliser products benefiting from preferential access under the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) regime is a sensible measure and a long-standing request from @COPACOGECA, which we welcome positively.
This suspension covers the main categories of fertilisers used by farmers (CAN, UAN, AS, DAP, MAP, NPK, etc.) and could help partially offset the loss of inputs previously sourced from Russia and Belarus.
⚠️However, we must be clear: given the scale of the Iranian crisis, this measure alone will not be sufficient to address short-term challenges for farmers.
Cheaper fertilisers for EU farmers. 🌾
The Council has suspended customs tariffs on key nitrogen-based products for one year, cutting an estimated €60 million in import duties and reducing reliance on Russian and Belarusian supplies.

Yesterday, at the Sustainable Livestock Intergroup meeting in Strasbourg, @COPACOGECA Austrian sheep farmer Roland Taferner 🇦🇹 highlighted the growing wool crisis: "For many farmers, wool has become a cost rather than a source of income. Urgent EU action is needed to unlock wool circularity and ease regulatory barriers. "
Let's make wool our European flagsheep again! 🐑

🗨️The @EU_Commission must ban the import of livestock products treated with antibiotics as growth promoters immediately!
The list of authorised countries for export of animal products to the EU confirms our longstanding concerns about production standards in certain countries, notably Brazil, from which the EU imports significant quantities of livestock products !
The Commission’s decision to exclude Brazil from the list of approved exporters under the EU’s antimicrobial resistance rules is a step in the right direction, but it must now be followed by the immediate suspension of all relevant imports from Brazil until full compliance with EU requirements is independently and thoroughly verified - Not wait till September.
👀The latest evidence uncovered by Copa’s Irish members, the IFA, during their 3,000 km fact-finding mission on the ground, clearly showed the apparent unrestricted sale and use of veterinary antibiotics without proper controls, traceability, or oversight. This raises major concerns for food safety, animal health and fair competition.
💢EU farmers comply with some of the world’s strictest standards, and imported products must meet the very same requirements. There can be no double standards when it comes to antimicrobial resistance and consumer protection. The Commission must act now to safeguard our food system and protect European consumers.
🎉 Congratulations to Guillaume Gandon, new @SugarBeetEurope President!
A voice for EU farmers, he’ll champion the needs of sugar beet growers facing rising costs, market instability and geopolitical risks as many arable 🇪🇺farmers.
🌱#SugarBeet is a key part of EU agriculture, food security, crop rotation, bioenergy and bioeconomy.
📢Today was election day at @SugarBeetEurope ! CIBE members elected Guillaume Gandon (France) as new CIBE President 👏. "My goal, as President of CIBE, is to rebuild a real European sugar policy now”, stated CIBE President Guillaume Gandon.

The breakthrough on the EU-US agreement reached last night is step towards greater certainty for farmers and agri-cooperatives.
🇪🇺🇺🇸Copa and Cogeca now expect the final approval and for the @EU_Commission to move the transatlantic trading relationship forward, including further work on better trading terms and 0x0 options for key export categories, while ensuring there is no compromise on EU production standards, for the sake of EU producers and consumers.
🔎It will also be important to closely monitor export trends and impact in the sectors where important concessions have been made under this agreement.
