Yesterday, during @UNRwanda Commemoration of #IWD2026 in Kigali, our Director of Programs joined a panel discussion on “Normative progress and gaps in policies and laws,” bringing a frontline perspective on what it takes to turn rights into reality for women and girls.
Drawing from the work of our network, she highlighted practical pathways we have created to expand access to legal aid services, especially for women and girls in rural areas:
✅Community-based Paralegals across all districts in the country,
✅Mobile Legal Aid Clinics reaching women where they are, and
✅Remote legal assistance through our dedicated legal aid call centre "1022".
She emphasized that these are not abstract systems; they make justice a reality for many vulnerable individuals who would otherwise have no avenue for redress.
She also highlighted persisting challenges, noting that they are less about the legal framework and more about: low awareness of rights and laws, patriarchal norms, cost barriers, stigma, economic dependence, and limited resources of legal aid providers, among others, which continue to prevent women from claiming their rights.
In her call to action, she emphasized the vital need for sustained funding for frontline legal aid service providers and stronger coordination among actors across sectors.
“Because access to justice is not only legal, it is multi-dimensional.”
