On the subjects of Pebble and slow play, I was there recently covering an event for @youthoncourse. We were grabbing interviews and b-roll of various donors who were playing the course that day. I was assuming something close to 6-hour rounds.
As the groups were teeing off, I noticed this nice woman pep-talking a few groups prior to teeing off. Her name was Tina Marie. She was encouraging the groups to play in less than 4.5 hours. She might’ve actually said 4! I scoffed. “Since when do people play Pebble in less than 5 hours?!” One of the caddies chimed in: “The last few months.” And another caddie confirmed. And then another. Regardless, I remained skeptical.
The Director of Golf, Eric Lippert, rolled up and I asked what had changed?
Turns out, it’s the starters like Tina Marie.
They have a rotation of starters now, and each one gets assigned to a certain amount of groups. Say 4 or 5 of them. After those starters have introduced themselves on the first tee and provided them the expectations, it’s now on those groups and that starter to make sure expectations are met. If a group falls out of position, it’s those specific starters who will meet with their assigned groups on the course and remind them of the agreement they made on the first tee. They ask if there’s anything they can do to help them play faster, catch up. And apparently it’s working!
Lippert explained that getting that first hour of tee times to get in closer to 4 hours than 5 sets the tone for the rest of the day. And that this system is here to stay. Giving praise where praise is due.
@LouStagner My question is am I aiming “that distance” outside the hole on a straight line or is the apex of the break “that distance” off a direct line to the center of the hole?
@Eldricks_hoes@Zbeees1 ‘common man with uncommon dreams.’ Can I steal that? I like it!! Trying to set my 12 yo daughter on the path you speak of, wish I had figured it out earlier myself.
Scottie allegedly never told the police “I’m Scottie Scheffler.”
All he said is “I’m trying to get to my tee time.”
If I ever get arrested, I’m for sure going to tell them “I’m just trying to get to my tee time.”
Favorite spot to watch PGA Tour golf in person:
1. Tee boxes (drives)
2. Fairway (approaches to the green)
3. Greens (watching approach shots come in)
4. Greens (watching putts only)
5. The deep rough (where you can get 2 feet from the pro and hear them talk to their caddy)
6. Driving range (ball striking clinic)
7. Other ( _____________)
Wow. Jack Nicklaus did not mince words this afternoon during his interview.
He said “Imagine that your tour is so bad that you have to pay someone, who can’t take a full back swing, $600 million just to show up.”
