Reading the Padilla, I remembered the employee from the Lorenz piece who said that Instagram cares most about people spending time on the app for revenue. I feel like IG removing likes is only motivated by making people feel less self conscious SO THAT usage/profit ⬆️

From the Baym, I was interested to see that women were making remixes of tv footage since 1969. When I’ve seen TV show edits on Twitter and Instagram, I’ve thought these were media unique to the 2010s. Yet, we continue to learn about women as pioneers in this class. @CUComm3200

Bryant, like Lorenz, points out that influencers aren’t offered the same protections as bigger celebrities. Bryant says celebs have more income security than influencers, in times like these, and Lorenz points out how they don’t have teams to deal with harassment. @CUComm3200

In the Bromwich, the comparison of cancelling someone = breaking up with them reminded me of my friend who once loved Kim Petras. After finding out about her involvement with Dr. Luke, an abuser, my friend “cancelled” her and took space from her music, like a breakup. @CUComm3200

With the negative effects COVID isolation has on mental health, the Lorenz made me fear for micro-celebs who have to deal with IG harassment on top of isolation; they’re more vulnerable bc they don’t have the resources that big celebs do to deter involvement w trolls. @CUComm3200

In reading about how most content creators can’t mention coronavirus in the Stolkel-Walker, I realized how new Youtuber beef that I’ve seen might be coming from the involved parties needing to look for content that can fill the hole of not talking about COVID-19 @CUComm3200

From the Cook, I was upset to read how Selena had to label herself as a dancer instead of a stripper on IG, out of fear of being censored, whereas far right activists can spew whatever damaging rhetoric they want onto the platform. IG is being blatantly misogynistic. @CUComm3200

Jackson mentions how, thankfully, people can’t be as openly ignorant due to marginalized communities having an empowered voice on Twitter. I saw this when users held influencer Trisha Paytas responsible for claiming she was trans/having D.I.D with no basis whatsoever @CUComm3200

Papacharissi’s notion of the “doubling of place” interested me because I immediately related it to the Super Bowl, where it takes place in some stadium, but, culturally, it’s also located within Twitter/IG/Facebook, due to the coverage and memes that result from it. @CUComm3200

In the Woolley/Howard, I was fascinated to see that bots make up 30 million active Twitter accounts, but I wasn’t completely surprised, considering the amount of times I see political users call out bot “users’” tweets’ locations as contradicting the tweet’s content. @CUComm3200

In the Swanson, not only did the included Insta pics annoy me, due to the gross wealth they depicted, but also so did hearing how low SES college graduates are as well off as wealthy high school dropouts; education is always emphasized as THE source of opportunity :/ @CUComm3200

I see Albany and Sanvic’s point as to how TikTok disguises itself as a creative platform of expression, and not social media, in order to pass under parents’ radars; my younger cousins/their parents do dances on it, despite the racism it’s viewing algorithms promote. @CUComm3200

In the Noble, I was horrified to read about the racist search results tied to the White House and Michelle Obama, and it made me wonder how search algorithms are reviewed for such blatantly racist results to ensue. Do we put too much faith in corporate info control? @CUComm3200
