#cucomm3200 as my last contribution to the twitter aspect of this class i just wanted to bring up the gem that is cancel culture. i see #(someone)isoverparty trending almost every day, but today, even prime video has been cancelled. #primevideoisoverparty
@CUComm3200 padilla's 2019 article addresses the then-new concept of Instagram hiding likes; while users can see the numbers on their own posts, others can't. this is meant to shift the purpose of IG from clout to connection. personally, i haven't consciously felt a difference
@CUComm3200 the oppenheimer piece discusses how phones aren't intruding on our relationships/interactions nearly as much as most of us believe, however this is just 1 studied public space and further research could be done in private spaces like homes
while positive trans visibility has grown thanks to the internet, its gains were mostly early on, during the obama era. under donald, the aggressive "no men in women's bathrooms" narrative has so far succeeded in making trans people afraid to be in public @CUComm3200
it's interesting to read how cancel culture isn't as impactful as we think it is. as someone who only sees the dramatic declarations of people being cancelled online and moves on very quickly afterwards, i've never actually seen what, if any, long terms effects exist @CUComm3200
Banet-Weiser's preface echoed my r(x) to election night. i was confident that trump would lose. it was confusing to understand his win, although this confusion is likely b/c of my filter bubble + the pluralistic ignorance of trump supporters who stayed silent about their support
@CUComm3200 i've personally experienced delays and disappointments before with instagram's reporting tool& seen/received abusive content, but it was still really surprising to read in lorenz's article that there's only 7500 people who review reports?? that's ridiculous..
@CUComm3200 Misreale's article brings up Twitter's algorithmic newsfeed. How it works relates to a concept from Networks: the "rich-get-richer" phenomenon. In this case, tweets w/lots of clout tend to get even more clout (& go viral), while tweets w/little clout remain unpopular
@CUComm3200 the shadow ban article is basically an extension of vivian ho's article addressing the tumblr ban on sexual content, but focuses on instagram's censorship of sex worker content. platforms that won't publicly comment on their algorithms are problematic and gross
@CUComm3200 while in-person movements result from hierarchical organizations with strongly tied members, social media provides weakly linked networks that are minimally effective in promoting real activism beyond low-effort contributions like signing a petition (gladwell)
papacharissi's piece mentions how civic participation thru formal political engagement has declined. this reminds me of how low voter turnout is, yet how vocal people are on social media about issues they presumably care about but do very little to address ... @CUComm3200
@CUComm3200 the term "technocracy" is a new one to me. i'm intrigued that people believe engineers & scientists can provide an objective, rational rule, even though they are also human & we have seen how their biases bleed into their work, like thru the algorithms they create
@CUComm3200 "Rich kids of Instagram" points out the increasingly wide and rigid gap between the rich and poor, and how education isn't the equalizer we think it is. This also reminded me of the Rich Kids of Tehran (Iranian version of RKOI--rich kids flexing is a global thing)
