A comparison between gaslighting and psychiatry is striking.

Gaslighting is defined as a form of psychological manipulation used to make a person doubt their own reality and their perception of events. The term comes from the 1944 film Gaslight, where a husband manipulates his wife into believing she’s going insane by dimming the gas lights in their home and then denying that the lights are flickering.

In the same way the husband abused and manipulated his wife in the film, psychiatrists are doing it for real to their patients. They dismiss, invalidate, trivialise and generally make less of patients and their reported symptoms while pathologising them, leading to patients doubting their own reality, their perceptions, and/or their sanity.

Gaslighting is cruel and inhumane. The comparison with psychiatry is not coincidental.

Psychiatrists sell sickness to the worried well by "disease-mongering," defined as “the act of convincing essentially well people that they are sick, or slightly sick people that they are very ill.”

Psychiatric texts describe difficulties associated with regular life problems which are categorised as "disorders". It's a practice that holds psychiatry up to ridicule. It's also resulted in non-psychiatrists as well as psychiatrists themselves commonly referring to psychiatrists as not being "proper" doctors.

Psychiatric narratives can be blinding unless steps are taken to allow people to be fully informed of the possible risks and benefits associated with psychiatric treatments. If people were fully informed, they could make an informed choice rather than accepting pseudo-scientific, negative narratives promoted by the psychiatric industry. #MentalHealth #psychiatry #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #psychiatrist
