- Elite Choices I: you are a political elite in a given regime. you are faced with pressing policy issues that seem to be impossible to solve through existing institutional channels, or are very concerned that should the opposing party(s) get elected they would make disastrous choices. you therefore think that the only way to prevent this is to ensure elections always go your way, and that you gain full control of all relevant institutions.
- Elite Choices II: you are already in power and do not want to give it up. Some admixture of the above points makes the consequences of losing power clear and detrimental. therefore, you seek to aggrandize more power such that this will not happen.
- Regime Illegitimacy: you believe the regime in which you live is illegitimate, malign, and perhaps even explicitly repressive against yourself. you therefore desire it's overthrow and replacement with a better regime, which may require an extensive transition period under an unaccountable authority to right various wrongs and ensure there is no counterrevolution to swing the pendulum back.
- "CoMpLeXiTy": you are a dumb bad person who is dumb and bad and hates when things are not simple. the world should be simple. you therefore love dictatorship. generically.
