It is with great pleasure that we're today announcing that we've raised €5M to scale our mission of enabling a data-driven decarbonization of electricity 🎉
Thank you for everyone who supported us and scrutinized us since the early stages of the journey 🙌
🚀Electricity Maps raised €5M to accelerate the data-driven decarbonization of electricity.
We're excited to be backed by investors @TransitionVC and @ReventVC, allowing us to grow our team and improve mapping the world’s electricity grid. Read more: https://t.co/NacEEHbarK
🚨 Grid alert - Major power outage in Spain and Portugal (Spanish version below)
The Iberian network was automatically disconnected from the European grid at 12:38 PM CET, leaving millions without power. This major power blackout hit Spain and Portugal, also affecting Andorra and some parts of France close to the border.
The Spanish TSO, Red Eléctrica (REE), expects to restore the supply in the next 6 to 10 hours. The causes of this major outage are still to be determined.
We are closely reporting the data shared by ENTSO-E and monitoring all updates coming from the Spanish TSO (REE), the French TSO Réseau de Transport d'Électricité (RTE) and other governmental sources to keep all users informed.
Spanish authorities have temporarily stopped all nuclear power supply due to safety reasons, as can be seen in the data visualization below. You can observe these and other related events in our app and see the effects on neighboring grids. Please note that there may be slight delays in the data.
Note: ENTSO-E (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity) is the central point for the collection and publication of data related to the generation, transportation, and consumption of electricity across Europe.

@JingqiJin@ElectricityMaps Depending on the situation, the marginal power plant can be on the same grid, or in a neighbouring grid. Identifying where it is located is what we mean by the quoted sentence.
Are you thinking about using marginal emissions factors for scope 2 accounting?
In this new @ElectricityMaps blog post, I break down the “impact accounting” approach and the issues that arise when using it with corporate emissions reporting.

Our 2024 datasets are here! 📂🌎
As part of our ongoing commitment to decarbonizing the electricity grid, we released our free historical datasets — enabling companies around the globe to adopt more granular carbon accounting practices.

🌎 We’re moving fast toward global coverage: Electricity Maps has just added over 110 new countries to the platform.
With greater coverage, we are equipping key drivers of change to reduce emissions and advance sustainability efforts — no matter where they operate.

Great (and scary) visualization of 2024 daily temperatures compared to prior years by the BBC today. Evocative of the iconic Joy Division album cover from 1979: https://t.co/o2zLigFV7h
Does anyone know of publicly available short-term interconnector forecasts in the US, similarly to how @ENTSO_E publishes scheduled commercial exchanges?
Right now is *not* a good time to use electricity in Denmark (due to low wind). How do I know? Aside from checking @ElectricityMaps, I'm kept informed by my macOS status bar and by our office lightbulb (credit @FelixQvist).
Now that 2024 is over, we can start looking at trends in @ElectricityMaps. Two important observations for Germany:
- didn't have any nuclear power production in 2024
- reduced its carbon intensity from 371 to 333g CO2e/kWh
