Booted up Return to Castle Wolfenstein for the first time in 15 years and… good lord. I forgot just how much sauce this game has. The atmosphere, the sound design, the sheer vibe. They really don't make them like this anymore.
@lucyllewy@unixterminal How is it unreasonable to expect that a text box and a button could manifest in memory and draw in under 8ms? If the people making this stuff cared, they wouldn't be measuring it in milliseconds, in fact they wouldn't need to measure it at all.
Just want to make sure I'm reading this right: Microsoft rewrote the run dialog with performance "top-of-mind", and the best they could manage to do when putting up a single text box was 10fps?
@FracturedRTS I played this more than any other c&c. There really is something about it that sets it apart. It's sort of a perversion of the ip that could have fallen flat but they nailed it perfectly instead.
@GeniusGTX This is actually false. Can't remember the source of the study, however it did in fact confirm that painting red dots on an airplane does not actually increase its effectiveness or survivability in combat.
In 1994 at the Game Developer Conference I was asked at a panel why Doom was all about targeting and shooting, and asked why it couldn't be more restrained. Like, why couldn't Doom have alternatives to shooting demons.
So I asked him, "Would you play Doom if it was toned down like that?"
He honestly said, "Probably not. It's not my kind of game. I like things like Populous and King's Quest."
I hear this a lot - someone doesn't like something I worked on, and wants me to change it even though they, themselves, won't play it. I guess they can't stand the idea of someone enjoying something different from them.
Actually had a guy say once, "Can't we talk to the demons?" I replied, "The demon says 'Your mother sucks cocks in Hell!' and attacks." He was mad.
I can open this 26 year old documentation and browse it in a fast and functional interface that still ships with modern Windows.
26 years from now all web-based docs written today will be lost while this 5mb DirectX 7 documentation will still work just as well as it did in 1999.
I keep hearing that pixel art games do better than low poly 3D ones because "low poly is janky, unappealing and an acquired taste"
Are you sure about that?
My last words when I left Epic were "Please remaster the original Unreal" and, well, the fans are doing it.
Looks SO COOL. Time for a new generation to learn that Unreal isn't just an engine. Worked my butt off on this game.
