Why do the figures in this painting look so different? 🤔
Renoir was born #OnThisDay in 1841. His painting, 'The Umbrellas', was created in two stages, with a gap of around four years. The group on the right, which includes a mother and her two daughters is painted in a characteristically Impressionist manner. On the left of the composition, completed during the second stage, the figures are precisely drawn, with a greater sense of three-dimensional form. This demonstrates the change in Renoir’s art during the 1880 when he began to move away from Impressionism and towards classical art.
