Thank you @JaneCoaston@NYtimes for having me and @m_clem on The Argument podcast to discuss temporary work visa programs - their flaws and how to make meaningful reforms that protect workers - as well as their importance to immigration policy debates:
On today’s episode of The Argument, @janecoaston is joined by @m_clem and Daniel Costa to debate how we fix immigration in America. https://t.co/x73OIyQINz
You put impunity and cruelty over the rule of law. Why can’t DHS respect the Tenth Amendment? States have rights and these simple directives to protect/inform the public - none of which are even obstructive - shouldn’t agitate you so much that you veer into preposterous rhetoric.
Immigration jails are literally death camps now, and the response from Congressional Rs is to hand ICE many more billions of dollars to continue this nightmare:
ICE reported the 18th death of an individual in its custody so far this year, putting the agency on track to record a new all-time high in detainee deaths. https://t.co/Cc4kTSa1S2
Protections like TPS are a band-aid for a flawed immigration system but improve labor standards and wages & protect millions of workers from some of the worst forms of employer lawbreaking.
-TPS has been shown to raise wages by 13%
-DACA has doubled wages

@nobodylikeyou_2@ringdinger7000 No I don’t remove it to drink or eat because that would break the seal. I just eat before I go. I go to events for work, medically vulnerable people deserve to be able to live our lives in the world safely. Consider why seeing someone in a mask triggers you so much
@meighanstone Thank you for your advocacy and for going to the hill in person (and all the hassles that entails) to advocate on behalf of so many of us! 🙏 Having someone there for meetings and hearings that staffers know and can talk to is invaluable.
If you are in crowded places with poor ventilation, #WearAMask.
Because it helps keep you and your community safe from #COVID19, flu and other respiratory illnesses.
And remember these other measures to help protect yourself and others from COVID-19, flu, measles and other respiratory illnesses:
-Practice hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette (cover your mouth and nose with a bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze)
-Keep a distance when possible
-Keep rooms well-ventilated
-Stay home if you feel unwell
-Get vaccinated and stay up to date with booster doses
The US has money for bombs, destruction, and global chaos - with none left over for healthcare or education - meanwhile we seem to find out weekly about new tech and engineering marvels that are resulting from what China invests in instead:
Map of Chongqing's metro system in 3D.
Chongqing is called the "mountain city". Building metro here is more difficult than in plain cities.
Chongqing’s metro total length ranks 7th in the world, with over 550 km.
📣GREAT NEWS📣 Just spoke to Hill champions: your hundreds of calls & emails are making such a difference, they've extended deadline for Senator sign-on to #FundLongCOVID Dear Colleague letter to MONDAY APRIL 20 10am ET! More @LCCampaign details incoming, senators now signed: 1/x
This is one of the most idiotic lies and claims he’s made - which is a high bar for RFK Jr. - and he provides no source or info to back it up, because he can’t:
.@RepCasar "Have you met with any of the 1.4 million people who have lost their health insurance just this last year from dropping off of Obamacare?"
@SecKennedy: "They're almost all illegal immigrants."
Rep. Andy Harris, the sole Republican House member from Maryland - is a zealot on a mission, to first, deport as many current immigrants as possible, and then replace them all with indentured migrant workers on temporary visas that employers control:

The Trump admin promised mass deportations would help US-born workers.
But according to MTW's @EconomicPolicy, US-born unemployment is rising, not falling.
"Trump’s draconian immigration enforcement is harming all workers"

Mullin clearly has no idea what "sanctuary city" means. States and cities are not required by law to cooperate with ICE or the Border Patrol, and sanctuary jurisdictions are simply ones that decline to assist them - they can't be forced to do the federal government's job for them
Mullin: I believe sanctuary cities is not lawful. Some of these cities have international airports. If they are a sanctuary city, should they really be processing customs into their city? We need to have a really hard look at that.
Baier: So you are saying that big cities that are sanctuary cities that have a big airport, they might lose their customs?
Mullin: I'm going to be forced to make tough decisions.
personally I am team #bigtent, but if we're gonna start kicking people out of the party on brand/moral grounds I would like to nominate 1) the foreign policy team behind the Gaza genocide, and 2) every Dem former elected/staffer who takes a cushy job with an overtly evil company
Contrary to Trump and Vance's promises to help unemployed US-born workers, *the unemployment rate has steadily increased* for U.S.-born workers under Trump during the mass deportation era. New analysis including the latest data from @BenZipperer and me:
