These two beautiful young women inspired my little Peri as she navigates her 4th grade life here in Pullman.

She walked up to both of them at Sunnyside Elementary (where they provided community service) and asked them “Are you Poly?” They answered her with an emphatic “Yes!” then proceeded to talk to my little girl making here feel empowered. These two young Samoans, from Aotearoa and Australia respectively, exemplified and represented what is possible for my daughter despite the challenges she’ll inherently face.

The adage “Because you are, I can too” reverberates in my mind as we await the PAC12 Championship game today for our Washington State Women’s Basketball Team in Las Vegas.

REAL TALK: WSU Women’s BBall team provides me inspiration and hope to get to the Rose Bowl—much like Ula and Charlisse have done for my little Peri. I know our football history, I know it’s unfavorable towards us ever being there…I get it. Yet, I also know our players are “Palouse Built” like these young ladies and every other athlete from WSU. Although we are not immune to the challenges currently pervading the new-age of college sports/football nationally, we’re gonna fight through them because that’s the Palouse way and inherently who we are as Washington State Cougars.

The outside world can tell me I’m wrong. They can tell me I’m dreaming. They can naysay all they want, for I’ll just look to this women’s BBall team (who are in the Championship game for the first time in HISTORY) and say: because they are, I can too!!!
