3/ I believe in reason’s gentle tyranny over people. Sooner or later they have to give in to it. Nobody can go on indefinitely watching me drop a pebble, then say it doesn’t fall.´
Bertolt Brecht, Life of Galileo
Ableism and denial are driving the push for “no more sick leave” policies.
Ironically, those same attitudes will eventually erode the very reality they’re trying to preserve.
It happens one infection at a time.
If you’ve ever wondered why so many scientists who understand the risks don’t publicly mask, consider the incentives. They know they’re not immune. But prevention doesn’t earn the same rewards as fitting in.
TV appearances. International keynote invitations. Institutional promotions. Leadership positions. Grants. Awards. Interviews.
The people pushing prevention often receive the opposite treatment.
They’re left out of institutional videos. Passed over for visibility. Quietly moved to the back of the line.
That’s what happens when a culture rewards managing the consequences more than preventing the harm.

📢 🪧 The right to protest is meant to be for everyone!
This law is telling Clinically Vulnerable people:
Take part - but you must choose if you want to simply risk your health, or risk arrest (and subsequently risk your health).
...which is no choice at all!!!
8/
To be fair, this isn't a blanket ban.
It applies only in police-designated zones, for up to 24 hours, in England & Wales.
But that's no use if you're Clinically Vulnerable and a zone is declared around a protest you have every right to join.
7/
And so the burden falls on you...
Under s.157 you have to prove your reason was health.
Strikingly, the Act's defences for letting off flares, and for protesting outside politicians' homes, are drafted more leniently than the one for a sick person in a mask!!!
6/
In practice:
A Clinically Vulnerable person masking to protect themselves *can* be stopped, told to unmask, and potentially arrested first then only later gets to explain why.
We shouldn't have to go to court for protecting our health!
5/
"But there's a health exemption, surely?"
No. There's a health defence... and that is really not the same thing.
* An exemption means you are protected.
* A defence means you have already committed the offence - and you will have to justify yourself.
4/
What has changed:
Before, wearing a mask wasn't an offence. You only broke the law if an officer told you to remove it and you refused.
Now the *wearing itself* is the offence.
Masking is the crime.
3/
The Crime and Policing Act 2026 (section 157) came into force on 29 June.
Police can designate an area a "no-mask zone" for up to 24hrs around a protest.
Wear anything that conceals your identity there - a protective respirator included - and you have committed an offence.
2/
🚨 WARNING: As of Monday, wearing a mask at a protest is a criminal offence in England & Wales.
This is now the law.
🧵 on what this means for Clinically Vulnerable people...

As a physician working in Germany: this lunacy will have catastrophic consequences for all sides: patients and doctors -and businesses:
A) This will force patients to go to work when they should be staying home and resting, ultimately endangering themselves and others and prolonging recovery times - because it’s actually insane to demand from people with fever or diarrhea to actually physically go and see a doctor on the first day of their symptoms.
B) This is going to be an absolute nightmare for doctors and emergency departments.
There’s absolutely no capacity whatsoever in the German healthcare system for this utterly absurd legislation.
Living through fascism and climate crisis will be disabling. Not just deadly, it will be disabling. Those who survive aren't likely to do so while preserving their health. Plan accordingly and center disability and disability justice in your politics.
Why did our ruling class not invest in decarbonising faster to avoid this acceleration in deadly heatwaves that scientists warned would come? Because of the capitalist law of value.
Capital invests in what is most profitable to capital, rather than what is most necessary for humanity, so our ruling class keeps ploughing investment into fossil fuels and SUVs, while we get far too little in renewables and public transit, even while the world burns around us.
We have more than enough capacity (labour, factories, technology) to address the climate crisis, but as long as capital controls investment and production we are prevented from doing it.
We are trapped by the capitalist law of value, living in a miserable shadow of the world we could have.
actually, he's a very weak person who, though hating his wife, lacks the courage to ask for a divorce & so just continues through years of recording every negative thing about her, hating her & inviting the reader to hate her, too.
If everyone wants air con installed over the UK then may I suggest we go ahead and also install air ventilation and purifiers whilst we are at it. Schools, hospitals and any public place should have it as a standard.
