@Helenreflects I think in GCSE Religious Studies classes, with a teacher who was preoccupied with philosophical questions and dialectically minded. Classes unusually consisted mostly of discussion. Unfortunately he also tended towards combative discussion so classes were decidedly not inclusive
@bendavies_ When recording lectures, I worried this would be compounded by implicit viewer assumptions about how slick video content can be, if only I re-recorded/edited (thinking about standards of YouTube compared to eg 5-10 years ago). But I suspect uming might be good for comprehension
@bendavies_ So your kind of example might be motivation for the thought that virtues are solely of instrumental value (my sense is that this is a less common view in VE literature)
@bendavies_ I like this. I originally wondered if someone like Brady might be able to avoid it with the thought that virtue has instrumental and intrinsic value, where the latter is slight in comparison. But, no matter how slight, you can get your case off the ground with the right numbers
@bendavies_ I suspect part of this looks back to (a contested view of) Aristotle as supposing that virtuous activity has normative priority over possession of virtue
@bendavies_ The point about virtue might depend on what you think the value of virtue is. Some virtue theorists will claim that manifesting virtue has non-instrumental value, I suspect because they have the intuition that world 2 is worse wrt virtue
Excited that @Nottingham_Jim and I have a piece out in @philosophersmag on our recent work with @PhiloPrison. It was a great opportunity to reflect on the value of philosophy in prison and lovely to co-author (a dismally rare phenomenon in philosophy) https://t.co/GFels50dPi
@edithmayhall Love this. Particularly A’s gaze at the spring. It looks to me as though he’s marvelling / puzzling over it. Perhaps the line is that Terry’s have produced a marvel that even A would have been intrigued / impressed by. Can’t think of any obv textual links off top of my head.
@luxemburglover Amazing - never heard of these people. Nearest for us is Taste of Greek in Forest Hill. Will def try this out! A post for @FootyScran perhaps?
@JakeWojtowicz Come and take them - Leonidas is supposed to have said it to Xerxes at Thermopylae, after X ordered L and Spartans to give up their weapons
No toilet paper might seem banal in comparison with contents of report, but ought not be, and is rather indicative of how prisoners are routinely treated without dignity, respect, and humanity
Important and grim report, confirming the extent of dire conditions in UK prisons throughout covid. Note that regimes in many prisons are still limited, with paucity of time out of cells, activities, and resources, eg at one prison a longstanding toilet paper shortage
So glad that the Guardian has picked up the report we wrote with @uservoice on the tragedy that is unfolding in prisons over the past two years. Please RT (1/3) https://t.co/CzkbxXGrF0
